The first cement plant was set up in Chennai in 1904. After Independence the industry expanded.A small cement factory was established in Madras in 1904 by a company named South India Industrial Ltd.Later Cement Factory of India. India entered into the Cement Era in 1914, when the Indian Cement Company Ltd. started manufacturing Cement in Porbundar in Gujarat.

The industry is located around Delhi, Gurgaon, Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore, Hyderabad, Jamshedpur and Bengaluru.

Bangalore has emerged as the electronic capital of India. Bengaluru is the “IT CAPITAL OF INDIA”.. the fact being that it homes many IT companies across the district than any other place in India. There is a place named ELECTRONIC CITY near Anekal in Bengaluru.

HMT, Bengaluru is an electronics industry.HMT diversified into watches, tractors, printing machinery, metal forming presses, die casting and plastic processing machinery, and CNC systems and bearings.

The Information Technology Industry has been a major foreign exchange earner in the last two or three years because of its fast growing Business Processes Outsourcing (BPO) sector. The continuing growth in the hardware and software is the key to the success of IT industry in India.

The economic strength of a country is measured by the development of manufacturing industries.Economic development is a policy intervention endeavor with aims of improving the economic and social well being of people, economic growth is a phenomenon of market productivity and rise in GDP.

Many industries tend to come together to make use of the advantages offered by the urban centres known as agglomeration economies. .Agglomeration economies are the benefits that come when firms and people locate near one another together in cities and industrial clusters.Gradually, a large industrial agglomeration takes place.

Sugar industry is seasonal in nature so, it is ideally suited to the cooperative sector.For the entire year the farmers are engaged in producing sugarcane as it is an annual crop.The seasonal nature of the sugar industry is combated by setting up cooperative where farmers share the profit and losses.

Regular supply of electricity and an assured source of raw material at minimum cost are the two prime factors for location of the industry.

Although industries contribute significantly to India’s economic growth and development, the increase in pollution of land, water, air, noise and resulting degradation of environment that they have caused, cannot be overlooked.Industries are responsible for four types of pollution:(a)Air (b)Water (c)Land (d)Noise.
