It is the second largest port in terms of volume of traffic handled and is the oldest artificial harbour on the east coast of India. It handles petroleum products, crude oil, fertilisers, iron ore and dry cargo.

• Mumbai is a natural harbour on the west coast and is also the biggest port of India.
  
• Kochi in Kerala is a natural harbour. It handles the export of tea, coffee and spices and imports of petroleum oil and fertilisers.
  

Paradip port is an artificial deepwater port of the east coast. It is located in the district of Jagatsinghapur in Odisha.  It was started in the year 1996 by the Government of India. 

• Marmagao port is located in south Goa which is located on the western coast.
  
• The Marmagao port has contributed immensely to the growth of maritime trade in India. Marmagao port (Goa) is the premier iron ore exporting port of the country. This port accounts for about 50% of India’s iron ore export.  
  

India has 12 major ports and 181 medium and minor ports. Major ports are maintained by shipping ministry of central government. Minor ports are maintained by relevant respective state ministries of 9 coastal states of India.

Port that is located on the cross roads of east and west is Cochin port. It is the largest shipyard in India located in the state of Kerala. It falls under public sector undertaking organisation it was founded in the year 1972. Services offered are ship building, ship repair and design.
