A system that values men more and gives them power over women is called patriarchy.India is still a male-dominated, PATRIARCHAL society.

Sri Lanka ,Pakistan and England have official state religion. India is a secular state and does not have any state religion.

Communalism can take place:
1.In everyday beliefs, like religious prejudices.
2.A quest for political dominance of one’s own religious community.
3.Political mobilisation on religious lines

Laws concerning family matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption etc. are known as Family laws.Women’s movement has argued that FAMILY LAWS of all religions discriminate against women.

Large-scale urbanisation, Growth of literacy and education and Occupational mobility leads to the breakdown of Caste hierarchy.

India is a secular state because:

1. It allows freedom to practise any religion
2. There is no official religion
3. It prohibits discrimination on religious grounds

Communal politics is based on the following ideas:

1. One religion is considered superior than the others
2. Creating a vote bank of the basis on religion
3. Parties promote religious stereotypes

The literacy rate among women is only 54 per cent compared with 76 per cent among men.c

Shift of population from rural areas to urban areas is referred to as urbanisation.

The Census of India records the religion of each and every Indian after every ten years. The person who fills the Census form visits every household and records the religion of each member of that household exactly the way each person describes it. If someone says she has ‘no religion’ or that he is an ‘atheist’, this is exactly how it is recorded.
