In a democracy any group of citizens is free to form a political party. In this formal sense there are a large number of political parties in each country. More than 750 parties are registered with the Election Commission of India.

Under the leadership of Jawahar lal Nehru, the Indian National Congress sought to build a modern secular democratic republic in India.

Group of people who come together to contest elections and hold power in the government is called a Political parties.

Every party in the country has to register with the Election Commission. While the Commission treats all parties equally, it offers some special facilities to large and established parties.

Parties provide people access to government machinery and welfare schemes implemented by governments. For an ordinary citizen it is easy to approach a local party leader than agovernment officer.

Partisanship is marked by a tendency to take a side and inability to take a balanced view on an issue.

The party which is recognised and registered by the government and election commission. It is given a unique symbol which can be used only by the candidates of that party. Thus these Parties getting special facilities are recognized by the “Election Commission” as Recognised Political Parties.

The Election Commission has laid down detailed criteria of the proportion of votes and seats that a party must get in order to be a recognised party. A party that secures at least 6 per cent of the total votes in an election to the Legislative Assembly of a State and wins at least two seats is recognised as a State party.

There is no full transparency in political party.Infact there is Absence of Transparency.Since most of the parties do not practice transparent procedures for their function, it becomes very difficult for ordinary members to rise to the top in the party.
