The change in the land use, during the 11th century, brought many benefits and more yields. It enabled peasants to use a field two years out of three if they planted one crop in autumn, and a different crop in spring a year and a half later, which meant that farmers could break their holdings into three fields.

• Nobility: The nobility comprised the aristocratic class, including kings, queens, lords, knights, and other titled individuals. Nobles held political power, controlled land, and often served as military leaders or administrators.
• Peasants: The peasant class encompassed the majority of the population, including farmers, laborers, and serfs. Peasants worked the land, providing agricultural produce and labor in exchange for protection and the use of land from the nobility.

The change in land use pattern was seen with the adoption of the Three field system.

The Three field system was an agricultural practice where arable land was divided into three fields, each used for different crops in rotation: one field left fallow or planted with legumes to restore soil fertility, one field planted with winter grains like wheat or rye, and one field planted with spring grains like barley or oats. This system allowed for more intensive land use, improved soil fertility, and increased agricultural productivity compared to earlier systems like the Two field system, where only two fields were alternated between cultivation and fallow.

Free peasants were individuals who owned or rented land directly from the lord or owned their land outright, unlike serfs who were bound to the land and owed labor or other obligations to the lord. Free peasants had more autonomy and rights compared to serfs, although their freedoms and privileges varied depending on the specific feudal system and region.

During medieval times, the largest population group in feudal society was the serfs. Serfs were agricultural laborers who worked the land owned by the nobility in exchange for protection and the right to cultivate a portion of the land for their own subsistence.

New agricultural technology during historical periods included the reclamation of land through techniques like drainage and irrigation, enabling the expansion of arable areas. The use of heavy iron-tipped ploughs improved soil cultivation and field preparation, increasing agricultural efficiency. Additionally, the adoption of shoulder harnesses for bullocks enhanced animal-powered agriculture by reducing strain and increasing pulling power. These innovations collectively contributed to higher agricultural productivity, allowing societies to sustain larger populations and foster economic growth.
