Methanogens is present in cow dung that produces methane gas. It is most common in cattle yard that provide unique smell in surrounding areas.

Primary treatment of sewage treatment involves physical removal of large and small particles like paper, plastic, pebble by passing through screen.

Secondary sewage treatment involves biological process to remove organic soluble and insoluble wastes from sewage water. Aeration of sewage increase the bacteria that consume the organic wastes.

During anaerobic decomposition of organic wastes by bacteria biogas is produced but lignin do not get decomposed by these bacteria and left over in biogas plants.

Water pollution from animal excreta and organic wastes from kitchen can be minimized many fold by using them for producing biogas. Anaerobic decomposition of these organic substances produces biogas.

Activated sludge-sediment in settlement tanks of sewage treatment plant is rich source of aerobic bacteria. Since activated sludge contain large amount of oxygen that prefer faster growth of aerobic bacteria.

Cattle dung is used for the production of biogas, commonly called gobar gas .The technology of biogas production from cow dung was developed in India mainly due to the efforts of Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) and Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).

Excretory wastes of animals (gobar) is used to get manure and gobar gas. Gobar gas is a methane rich fuel gas produced by anaerobic breakdown of gobar with the help of methanogenic bacteria present in gobar in very large numbers.

Treatment of waste water is done by heterotrophic microbes naturally present in sewage released from municipal waste waters. Sewage contains a number of harmful pathogen causing numerous diseases.

Steps involved in sewage treatment are filtration, sedimentation, biological treatment and chlorination. First two steps are called primary treatment of sewage and last two steps are called secondary treatment of sewage.
