During the course of ecological succession one seral community is replaced by other community due to environment of an area become unsuitable for existing species. The step that renders this change is called reaction.

Reforestation occurs due to ecological succession. So, principle of ecological succession has practical importance in reforestation from bare lands to well-developed forest.

The Arctic consists of desert and tundra vegetations. The desert vegetation consists of algae, lichens, and mosses. Lichens are the most dominant plants. The ground is bare with patchy cover of lichens and mosses.

Net Primary Productivity (NPP) is the amount of carbon uptake after subtracting Plant Respiration (RES) from Gross Primary Productivity (GPP). GPP is the total rate at which the ecosystem capture and store carbon as plant biomass, for a given length of time. NPP = GPP – RES.

Climax community is the final community of succession that remain stable for sometimes. They have maximum diversity and niche specilisation that makes them stable.

Ecological succession on an igneous rock starts from lichens that release some enzymes that decompose the rocks slowly. So, to observe beginning of ecological succession on igneous rock we must search over for Lichens.

Ecological niche of an organism represents range of conditions that it can tolerate, functional role in the ecological system but not the resources that are not utilized by organisms of a ecological niche.

The gradual and fairly predictable change in the composition of different species in a given area is known as ecological succession. During ecological succession, the population of certain species increases, while that of many others may decline or may even disappear. All communities undergo constant changes in their composition and structure in response to changes in environmental conditions.

A seral community or seral stage is an intermediate stage found in ecological succession in an ecosystem advancing towards its climax community. In many cases more than one seral stage evolves until climax conditions are attained.

A prisere is a collection of seres making up the development of an area from non-vegetated surfaces to a climax community.
