Read the following statements regarding the HIV virus.
    A. It is a type of retrovirus that has an envelope enclosing the diploid RNA genome.
    B. It multiplies in helper T cells and produces progeny virus.
    C. In the macrophages of the host, the RNA genome of the virus replicates to form viral DNA.
    D. Reverse transcriptase becomes inactive in the host cell.
How many of the above statements are correct?
    Solution
    • HIV is an enveloped retrovirus. Each virus particle contains two copies of an RNA genome. Hence, HIV is a type of retrovirus that has an envelope enclosing the diploid RNA genome.
    • HIV infects white blood cells in the body’s immune system called helper T cells. The virus attaches itself to the helper T cells.
    • In macrophages of the host cell, the RNA genome converts into DNA by reverse transcriptase enzyme and incorporated into the host DNA to produce viral DNA.
    • Without reverse transcriptase, the viral genome couldn't become incorporated into the host cell, and couldn't reproduce.
So, the correct option is 'Two'.
  • Question 2

Mark the odd one out with respect to autoimmune disease.
    Solution

A.Myasthenia gravis - a chronic autoimmune neuromuscular disease that causes weakness in the skeletal muscles, which are responsible for breathing and moving parts of the body, including the arms and legs.

B.Rheumatoid arthritis - is a long-term autoimmune disorder that primarily affects joints. It typically results in warm, swollen, and painful joints. Pain and stiffness often worsen following rest.

C.Parkinson’s disease - affects the nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine. its  symptoms include muscle rigidity, tremors, and changes in speech and gait.

D.Hay fever -  is an allergic reaction to environmental allergens such as pollens, dust mite, moulds and animal hair. Avoiding allergic triggers and taking appropriate treatments are the best ways to reduce the frequency of hay fever symptoms.

So, the correct option is ‘Parkinson’s disease’.
  • Question 3

Which of the following are the reasons for rheumatoid arthritis? Choose the correct option.
    I. Lymphocytes become more active
    II. Body attacks self-cells
III. More antibodies are produced in the body
IV. The ability to differentiate pathogens or foreign molecules from self-cells is lost
    Solution
    • Rheumatoid Arthritis is an autoimmune disorder affecting the joints of the body, mainly the hand and feet.
    • An autoimmune disorder means a disorder in which body immune system attack self-cells as it loses the ability to differentiate between the pathogen or disease-causing agent and self-cells and therefore, start making antibodies against own cells in a substantial amount.
So, the correct statements are 'II and IV'.
  • Question 4

Which disease is caused by nematode?
    Solution
    Correct option: B
    Explanation:

Ascaris is a nematode, also called roundworm that causes ascariasis, an infection in the small intestine.
    A. Malaria is caused by Plasmodium, a protist.
    B. Ascariasis is caused by Ascaris, a nematode.
    C. Leprosy is caused by Mycobacterium leprae
    D. Amoebiasis is caused by Entamoeba histolytica
Hence, the correct answer is 'Ascariasis'
  • Question 5

The picture give below shows the replication of HIV virus. Identify the phase of reverse transcription

    Solution
Reverse transcription takes place during the formation of viral genomic RNA from DNA.
So the correct option is 'B'
  • Question 6

Statement (SI) : In Elephantiasis, genital organs are also often affected, resulting in gross deformities. Statement (SII) : Filarial worms live for many years, in the lymphatic vessels of. the lower limbs.
    Solution
Filarial worms live in the lymphatic vessels for many years which blocks them and results in accumulation of lymph which affects the lower limbs and the genitals .
So the correct answer is ' Statements SI and SII are correct'.
  • Question 7

In an epileptic patient, doctor administer a $$GABA$$ facilitatory  drug. After considerable time fits are absent in the patient. What would be the probable mechanism of that drug
    Solution
A GABA receptor agonist is a drug that is an agonist for one or more of the GABA receptors, producing typically sedative effects, and may also cause other effects such as anxiolytic, anticonvulsant, and muscle relaxant effects.
So the correct option is 'It causes blocking of neurotransmitter at synapses and forms a complex'.

AIDS is caused by HIV. Among the following, which one is not a mode of transmission of HIV?
    Solution
HIV is transmitted through the exchange of body fluids. This is not involved during shaking hands.
