  • Question 1
    1 / -0

Benzene gets converted to benzaldehyde by Gatterman – Koch reaction. The appropriate reagent for the conversion is

    Solution

Gatterman Koch is a kind of Friedal craft acylation done in presence of CO and HCl using AlCl3 as a catalyst and are used to produce aromatic aldehydes.
    C6H6 + CO + HCl → C6H5CHO

  • Question 2
    1 / -0

Arrange the following sets of compounds in order of their increasing boiling points : Pentan – 1 – ol, butan – 1 – ol, butan – 2 – ol, ethanol, propan – 1 – ol, methanol

    Solution

Boiling point is α Vanderwall forces α Molecular weight.

When the molecular weight is same like in case of butan-1-ol and butan -2- ol, then boiling point increases as branching decreases. because with increase in branching, molecule occupies a spherical shape and surface are of contact decreases and hence boiling point decreases.

So, butan-2-ol will have lower boiling point than butan-1-ol.

  • Question 3
    1 / -0

Arrange the following alcohols, hydrocarbon and ether in order of their increasing boiling points Pentan – 1 – ol, n – butane, pentanal, ethoxyethane.

    Solution

Alcohols are involved in hydrogen bonding with each other i .e. intermolecular hydrogen bonding and thus have a higher boiling point compared to aldehydes or ketones and ethers.
Aldehydes and ketones due to their polar CO bond have higher boiling point compared to ethers.
Alkanes being non-polar have the least boiling point.
