SAARC is the regional organisation of south-east Asian countries consisting of eight member countries, namely, India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives and Afghanistan.

The South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) was established on 8 December 1985. The Secretariat of the Association was set up in Kathmandu, Nepal, on 17 January 1987. SAARC has eight member countries (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri-Lanka).

In 1978, China embarked on a series of economic reforms under the leadership of Deng Xiaoping, marking the beginning of its transition from a centrally planned economy to a more market-oriented economy. These reforms aimed to modernize China's economy, increase productivity, and improve living standards. Deng Xiaoping introduced various policies, including opening up to foreign investment, decentralizing economic decision-making, allowing private entrepreneurship, and implementing agricultural reforms such as the Household Responsibility System.

The organization initially known as 'BRIC' included Brazil, Russia, India, and China. Later, South Africa was added to the group, transforming it into 'BRICS'. South Africa's inclusion expanded the group's representation to include a diverse range of emerging economies from different regions, strengthening its influence in global economic governance and cooperation.

Indian, Pakistan, and China have many similarities in their development strategies. Till the 1980s, all the three countries had similar growth rates and per capita incomes.
