The British land revenue policy had a significant impact on the taluqdars of Awadh as they were disarmed and their forts were destroyed. In response to the rebellion, the British suspended ordinary legal processes and imposed martial law. This involved the deployment of military forces to quell the uprising and restore order. Martial law granted the military extensive powers to maintain control and enforce law and order, often resulting in harsh measures against rebels and suspected sympathizers. This approach was part of the British strategy to suppress the rebellion and reassert their authority over the affected regions.

 In response to Governor General Canning's plea for leniency towards the rebels, the British ridiculed his plea and demanded harsh punishment for the rebels. Many British officials and members of the public were outraged by Canning's perceived leniency and advocated for severe reprisals against the rebels. This pressure from within British society ultimately influenced the British government's response, leading to a continuation of the harsh measures taken to suppress the rebellion.

During the mutinies, some of the initial targets of attack were government buildings and the treasury. This included symbols of colonial authority and control, such as administrative offices and military installations. By targeting these sites, the mutineers aimed to disrupt British rule and assert their resistance against colonial oppression. Additionally, seizing control of government buildings and treasuries provided the mutineers with resources and strategic advantages to further their rebellion.

The rebels primarily sought to achieve the restoration of the world that existed before British rule by rejecting British authority and issuing proclamations against it. After the fall of British rule in Lucknow, Birjis Qadr was hailed as the leader of the rebellion. Birjis Qadr was the eldest son of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah, the ousted ruler of Awadh, and he assumed a leadership role in the resistance against British authority during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

The primary aim of the rebel proclamations issued during the 1857 uprising was to glorify the coexistence of different communities under the Mughal Empire. These proclamations emphasized unity among Hindus and Muslims against British colonial rule and highlighted the shared cultural and historical heritage of the Indian subcontinent. They sought to evoke sentiments of national pride and identity, rallying support for the rebellion by appealing to a sense of common identity and history under Mughal rule.

The proclamations calling upon the population to unite and rise against the firangis were posted in Hindi, Urdu, and Persian.
