Era of One-Party Dominance Test - 2

This famous sketch by Shankar appeared on the cover of his collection – Don’t Spare Me, Shankar. The original sketch was drawn in the context of India’s China policy. But this cartoon captures the dual role of the Congress during the era of one-party dominance.

Sukumar Sen (2 January 1898 – 13 May 1963) was an Indian civil servant who was the 1st Chief Election Commissioner of India, serving from 21 March 1950 to 19 December 1958.

The Kerala Legislative Assembly election of 1957 was the first assembly election in the Indian state of Kerala. The Communist Party of India won the election with 60 seats. The election led to the formation of the first democratically elected communist government in India.

One of the guiding principles of the ideology of the Swatantra Party was an Economy free from state control.

The First General Elections were held in India between 25 October 1951 and 21 February 1952.

The first three Lok Sabha elections of 1952, 1957, and 1962 were dominated by the Congress Party under the leadership of Jawahar Lal Nehru.

In the state assembly elections, the Congress did not get a majority in a few cases. The most significant of these cases was in Kerala in 1957 when a coalition led by the CPI formed the government. Apart from exceptions like this, Congress controlled the national and all the state governments.

The founder president of the Congress Socialist Party was Acharya Narendra Dev and after 1955 it came to be known as Socialist Party.

The interim government of India was formed on September 2, 1946, from the newly elected Constituent Assembly with the powers of a Prime Minister bestowed on the vice-president of the Council, Jawaharlal Nehru. It was in place till 15th August 1947, when the nations of India and Pakistan received Independence from colonial rule. Azad was appointed as head of the Department of Education. With the Muslim League part of the Interim Government as well, the Department of Finance was headed by Liaquat Ali Khan.
