The humanitarian crisis in Darfur, Sudan since 2003 has attracted empty promises by the International Community.

The UN’s most visible public figure, and representative head, is the Secretary-General. The present Secretary-General is Ban Ki-Moon from South Korea. He is the eighth Secretary-General of the UN.

Kofi Annan (Ghana) served as the seventh Secretary-General from 1997-2006.

The Secretary-General is the head of the UN Secretariat and the de facto spokesperson. He/she is rather appointed by the General Assembly on the recommendation of the Security Council, and he is dependent on the support extended by the members of the UN.

The General Assembly is the main deliberative, policymaking, and representative organ of the UN. All 193 Member States of the UN are represented in the General Assembly, making it the only UN body with universal representation.

One of the youngest of the international organizations, the WTO is the successor to the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) established in the wake of the Second World War.

The WHO has played a leading role in several public health achievements, most notably the eradication of smallpox, the near-eradication of polio, and the development of an Ebola vaccine.

The non-permanent members are elected in a manner so that they represent all continents of the world. The veto power possessed by 5 Permanent members has been seen as the most undemocratic character of the UN.
