Length of Coastline of Indian mainland is 6000 km.

Coastline of Indian mainland is surrounded by Arabian Sea in the west, Bay of Bengal in the east , and Indian Ocean in the south.

• The Eastern Coastal Plains is a wide stretch of landmass of India, lying between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal.
• It is wider and leveled than the Western Coastal Plains and stretches from Tamil Nadu in the south to West Bengal in the north through Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.

The Western Coastal plain lies between Kerala and Gujarat and stretches from the Arabian Sea to the Western Ghats.

The total length of the western coasts is 1400 kilometers and its width varies from 10 kilometers to 80 kilometers.

The main occupations of people in coastal plains are as follows:

• Agriculture is the main occupation; almost half of the total population in this region is engaged in farming.
• Most of the people in this region work in tea, coffee and rubber plantations.

Port Blair is the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, a union territory of India situated in the Bay of Bengal.

Kavaratti serves as the capital of the Union Territory and the region comes under the jurisdiction of Kerala High Court.

The islands are the northernmost of the Lakshadweep-Maldives-Chagos group of islands, which are the tops of a vast undersea mountain range, the Chagos-Laccadive Ridge.

The two coastal plains meet at Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of the Indian mainland.

The eastern coastal plain is located between The Bay of Bengal and the eastern ghats and the western coastal plain is located between the Arabian Sea and the western ghats.

Kochi or Cochin Port is the only major port in Kerala.

The Andamans are made up of 204 islands of varying size and are located in the eastern Indian Ocean as part of the Bay of Bengal.

The Eastern Coastal Plains lie in between the Eastern Ghats and the Bay of Bengal covering the states of West Bengal, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.

The Western Coastal Plains lie in between the Western Ghats and the Arabian Sea covering the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka and Kerala.
