  • Question 1
    1 / -0
Read the passage and answer the question given below.

It must be realized to make compulsory education a success, it is absolutely necessary to make it entirely free. India is a poor country and we cannot expect our people to pay directly for the education of their children. Even in rich countries like England and U.S.A. mas education is not only free but there are many additional facilities like mid-day meal for children, free medical service, and scholarship on a generous scale. Since education is a fundamental civil and human right and basic to the health of the body politics, funds must be found for the purpose whatever the cost of the scheme. If we consider educational and cultural activities to be important, funds will be forthcoming. What we have to do is to rearrange our priority. With this in view, we have to adopt a many-sided programme of national planning and economic and industrial reconstruction. If not there will always be arguments and statistics to prove that it is impossible to introduce free, compulsory and universal education in India.

Which of the following titles is the most suitable for the passage?
    Solution
Most often then not, the first sentence of a paragraph introduces the central issue that is discussed therein. Going by this logic, the central idea of the paragraph is compulsory education and how it needs to be free in order to be a complete success. So, we can conclude that the best title for the given passage would be option C as it encapsulates the main idea of the passage.
  • Question 2
    1 / -0
Read the passage and answer the question that follows.

One December night, a family had gathered around their fireside and piled it high with wood gathered from mountain streams and ruins of great trees that had come falling down the mountain sides. The fire roared and brightened the room with its light. The faces of the father and mother had a quiet gladness; the children laughed; the oldest daughter was the picture of happiness at seventeen; and the aged grandmother who sat sewing in the warmest place was the picture of happiness grown old.

    The firewood had been _______.
    Solution
The first sentence says the wood was "gathered" from mountain streams and ruins of great trees that came falling down the mountain sides. The word "gathered" has the same meaning as "collected." Hence, we can say that the wood was collected. C is the correct answer.
None of the other choices has the meaning contained by the word "gathered." We cannot accept them.
  • Question 3
    1 / -0
Read the passage and answer the question that follows.

Once while travelling by the local bus, I got a seat beside a very strange man. He seemed interested in every passenger aboard. He would stare at a person, scribble some odd mathematical notations on his long notebook and then move on to the next. Being quite interested in what he was doing I asked him what all those notations meant and then came the startling reply. He saw a man's face not as a single unit but as thousands of squares put together. He was in fact a statistical expert and a budding artist learning the art of graphics.

The man was scribbling down _______.
    Solution
Option D is the right answer because it is clearly mentioned in the passage that - 'He seemed interested in every passenger aboard. He would stare at a person, scribble some odd mathematical notations on his long notebook and then move on to the next.'
Options A, B, and C are incorrect because the right answer is Option D.
  • Question 4
    1 / -0
Read the passage given below and choose the option that best fits the question that follows:

"What is sixteen and three multiplied?" asked the teacher. The boy blinked. The teacher persisted, and the boy promptly answered: "twenty-four", with, as it seemed to the teacher, a wicked smile on his lips. The boy evidently was trying to fool him and was going contrary on purpose. He had corrected this error repeatedly, and now the boy persisted in saying "twenty-four". How could this fellow be made to obtain fifty in the class test and go up by double-promotion to the first form, as his parents fondly hoped? At the mention of "twenty-four", the teacher felt all his blood rushing to his head. He controlled himself and asked again: "How much?" as the last chance. When the boy said the same thing obstinately, he felt as if his finger was releasing the trigger: he reached across the table and delivered a wholesome slap on the youngster's cheek.

The teacher felt the blood rushing to his head because:
    Solution
The first time the boy answered the question, there was a smile on his lips. This made it evident that the boy was trying to fool the teacher. So, the teacher knew from the beginning that the boy was deliberately giving an incorrect answer. Hence, C is the correct choice.
Although the boy smiled the first time he answered, it is not clear if he had a smile on his lips as he answered the question later. So, we cannot accept A.
    B and D are rejected.

    Solution
"His wife had submitted to his persecution for thirty years with slave-like docility that is the badge of her tribe" is the most coherent arrangement of the given sentence: R makes the main statement, P gives a time frame and further elaborates on R, S is the most coherent link to P as it gives out information regarding "docility" and Q sums up the sentence. So, the answer is C.
  • Question 6
    1 / -0
Some parts of the sentence given below have been jumbled up. You are required to re-arrange these parts which are labelled P, Q, R and S to produce the correct sentence. Choose the proper sequence from the options.

Some men were rarely successful but they tried bribing their guards
                                                P                 Q                R                S
Which one of the following is the correct sequence?
    Solution
The first statement in the sequence should be the one that best connects with the first line. It must be a continuation or extension of the first line.
R is first in the sequence: R connects best with the first line. Thus, the line becomes 'Some men tried bribing'.
R is followed by S: S tells us who they tried bribing. It says that some men tried bribing their guards.
S is followed by Q: Q introduces a condition by saying 'but they'.
Q is followed by P: P concludes the sentence by saying that they tried bribing their guards but they were rarely successful.
Finally, the correct sentence is 'Some men tried bribing their guards but they were rarely successful'.
Thus, the correct sequence is R S Q P. Hence, C is the correct option.
  • Question 7

Some parts of the sentence given below have been jumbled up. You are required to re-arrange these parts which are labelled P, Q, R and S to produce the correct sentence. Choose the proper sequence from the options

in the middle of he stopped his speech to take a glass of water
                     P                   Q               R                          S
Which one of the following is the correct sequence?
    Solution
The first statement in the sequence should be the one that introduces a new topic. It must not be a continuation or extension of a topic.
Q is first in the sequence: It initiates a topic on 'he', the subject. All other phrases continue the discussion on the subject and thus, Q comes first. It says 'he stopped'.
Q is followed by P: P further adds that he stopped in the middle.
P is followed by R: R continues by telling us what he stopped in the middle of what. It says that he stopped in the middle of his speech.
R is followed by S: S tells us why he stopped. It says that he stopped in the middle of his speech to take a glass of water.
Finally, the correct line is 'He stopped in the middle of his speech to take a glass of water'.
Thus, the correct sequence is Q P R S. Hence, C is the correct option.
  • Question 8
    1 / -0
Some parts of the sentence given below have been jumbled up. You are required to re-arrange these parts which are labelled P, Q, R and S to produce the correct sentence. Choose the proper sequence from the options
after his arrival immediately he began to quarrel with his wife
                    P                   Q                   R                      S
Which one of the following is the correct sequence?
    Solution
The first statement in the sequence should be the one that best connects with the first line. It must be a continuation or extension of the first line.
Q is first in the sequence: Among the given choices Q best begins the discussion. Although R can begin (as given in option D), Q does not follow it. Since there are no other options fit to begin, Q is first. Thus, the line begins with 'immediately'.
Q is followed by P: P directly continues after Q. Thus, the line becomes 'Immediately after his arrival'.
P is followed by R: R tells us what happened after his arrival. It says that after his arrival he began to do something.
R is followed by S: S tells us what he began to do. It says that he began to quarrel with his wife.
Finally, the correct line is 'Immediately after his arrival he began to quarrel with his wife'.
Thus, the correct sequence is Q P R S. Hence, C is the correct option.

Read the passage and accordingly, fill in the blank:

As I slung my pack onto my shoulders a big mosquito thudded against my cheek. There had been a few through the day, but it was early in the season - the ice had gone out just two weeks before - and I had scarcely noticed them. But now as I walked down the ridge, the last breeze faded, and they were on me. Rising in clouds from the soggy tundra, they pelted against my face. I reached in my pocket for the repellent and came up empty.

The traveler carried with him _____________.
    Solution
Option D is the right answer because it is clearly mentioned in the passage that - 'As I slung my pack onto my shoulders a big mosquito thudded against my cheek.'
Option A is incorrect because the last line of the passage reads as - 'I reached in my pocket for the repellent and came up empty.'
There is no evidence in the passage to suggest that Options B and C are the right answers.
    Hence, these are incorrect.
