The advertisements of certain products ______
    Solution
Option D is incorrect because it is in the past tense whereas the statement is in the present tense.
Option A is correct because advertisements of many products are being spoken about, so 'are watched keenly' is correct, hence Option B is incorrect.
Option C is incorrect because children watch keenly has no specification, it would be correct if the statement was, 'children watch advertisements keenly'.

[passage-header]Complete the following passage using the passive form by choosing the most appropriate option: [/passage-header]
On 26th January, Gujarat __1___ by a devastating earthquake.
    A number of houses ___2___
    and thousands of people ___3___
Many people ___4___  under the debris.
The process of rebuilding __5__  by different organizations.
    The survivors __6___
Many heart-rending cries ___7__  when the debris __8___.

    ...view full instructions

Many heart-rending cries ___7___ when the debris __8__.
    Solution
The events of the paragraph happened in the past.

Past tense expresses an action or situation that was started and finished in the past. Most past tense verbs end in “-ed”. The irregular verbs have special past tense forms which must be memorized, like "left" is the past form of leave. For example – Last night, I finished my entire holidays homework.

The passive voice of past tense uses the past form of verbs.

In the given sentence 'many' and 'cries' are plural and 'debris' is singular. Therefore option C is correct as barring a few exceptions 'were' is used in plural form and 'was' is used in singular form.
Therefore other options here are incorrect.

Option C is the correct answer.

  • Question 3
    1 / -0
Choose the right word from the options to complete the sentence.
The way people behave _____ as they grow old.
    Solution
It is a common rule to use the simple present tense when we are talking about a fact or a general truth. As the sentence in question is a general truth it is only apt that we use the simple present tense. Hence option A is the correct answer.
Here 'people' is used as a single count noun referring to all of mankind as a unit. 'Change' can be used only with plural nouns; hence option B is incorrect.
The sentence requires to be in the simple present tense form; options C and D are incorrect as they are in the simple past and present continuous tenses.

and thousands of people ___3___ .
    Solution
Here, 'were killed' in simple past is correct because it is used to indicate an action that has already been completed. Here, due to the earthquake, thousands of people 'were' (past action) killed.
'Was killed' is incorrect because thousands of people is plural, not singular. Thus, usage of 'were' is incorrect.
'Are killed' is incorrect because 'are' is used in simple present tense's plural form, but here, simple past tense's plural form is used.
'Is killed' is incorrect because 'is'
is used in simple present tense's singular form, but here, simple past tense's plural form is used.

The process of rebuilding __5__ by different organisations.
    Solution
Here, 'was conducted' in simple past tense is correct because it is used to indicate an action that has already been completed. Here, different organisations 'conducted' (past tense) the process of rebuilding.
'Were conducted' is incorrect because the subject (process) is singular, so the verb should also be in singular form (was), not plural form (were). This will accomplish the subject-verb agreement.
'Conducted' and 'conducts' are both grammatically incorrect.

Many people ___4___ under the debris.
    Solution
Here, 'were trapped' in simple past tense is used because it is used to indicate an action that has already been completed. Here, due to the earthquake (that happened in the past), many people were trapped.
'Was trap' is incorrect because usage of 'many people' indicates plural form , not singular form.
'Trapped and 'traps' are both grammatically incorrect.
  • Question 7
    1 / -0
Complete the following sentence using the correct form of the verb in the bracket.

The largest flyover _____ (construct) last month in Delhi.
    Solution
The sentence talks about an event completed in the past as can be inferred from 'last month' in the sentence. Also the sentence talks about only one action therefore simple past form should only be used.

Past tense expresses an action or situation that was started and finished in the past. Most past tense verbs end in “-ed”. The irregular verbs have special past tense forms which must be memorized, like "left" is the past form of leave. For example – Last night, I finished my entire holidays homework.

Option B is in the wrong format of present continuous, as it lacks the helping verb 'being', therefore incorrect.
Option C is in present continuous form, but cannot be used here as it expresses an action that started and continues as we speak.
Option D is in future perfect form and cannot be used here.

Therefore option A is the correct answer.

  • Question 8
    1 / -0
A sentence can be formed when A, B, C, and D are put in an order. Identify the part which has an error.
    Solution
The correct sentence would be " when the young boy was accused of stealing he started to cry." After accused we put the preposition 'of' followed by a verbal noun or gerund. So, instead of 'to steal' it would be 'of stealing'. 'Stealing' is a gerund here, because it is the 'ing' form of the verb 'steal' and functions as a noun.
  • Question 9
    1 / -0
Choose the right word that fills the blank.
My sister hopes to one day _________ her dream of becoming a teacher.
    Solution
Option B is correct. It is in the simple present tense, which is used to express thoughts or beliefs, or a dream, like that of becoming a teacher. Option A is also in simple present tense, however, the presence of "to" makes the verb an infinitive and an "s" is not added after an infinitive. Therefore, it is incorrect. Option C is in present continuous tense and "ing" is not added after an infinitive verb. Option D is in the past tense but the indicated action or belief will occur in future, hence it is incorrect.
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the verb given in the bracket.

What _____ you _____ here after I left for college?  (do)
    Solution
'Do' is a verb here which means 'perform (an action precise nature of which is often unspecified' of which 'did' is the past form). The sentence refers to the past as can be inferred from 'left' which is the past form of 'leave'. Therefore the verb in the sentence should also be in its past form, therefore, option A is the correct answer.
Whereas options B, C, D   are not relevant in the given context, therefore are incorrect.
