    Consider the following statements:
    (1) The distance from the Sun to Earth is called as an Astronomical Unit (AU).
    (2) The Moon is probably created by a collision with a huge planetesimal more than 4 billion years ago.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
    Solution

    Consider the following statements:
    (1) Asteroids are made of mineral compounds, especially those containing iron, carbon and silicon.
    (2) The belt separates the first region of the Solar system from the second.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
    Solution

  • Question 3

When we consider $${15}^{o}$$ meridian on a world map or globe and count them in an Eastward direction starting with Greenwich Meridian ($${0}^{o}$$) we find that the time of this meridian is ___________.
    Solution
As the earth rotates from west to east, those places east of Greenwich will be ahead of Greenwich time and those to the west will be behind it. The earth rotates 360° in about 24 hours, which means 15° an hour or 1° in four minutes. Thus, when it is 12 noon at Greenwich, the time at 15° east of Greenwich will be 15 × 4 = 60 minutes, i.e., 1 hour ahead of Greenwich time.

    Consider the following statements:
    (1) Since, Venus is seen in the East in the morning and in the West in the evening, it is called 'morning star' as well as 'evening star'.
    (2) The Earth looks blue when seen from the outer space due to the presence of large amount of water, hence it is called 'blue planet'.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
    Solution

    Consider the following statements:
    (1) Mars is tilted at $${23}^{o}$$ in the same way as the Earth, so experiences four seasons as Earth.

Most of the communication satellites today are placed in a geostationary orbit. In order to stay over the same spot on the Earth, a geostationary satellite has to be directly above the ___________.
  • Question 8

    Consider the following statements:
    (1) Type I Supernova occurs in binary star systems in which gas from one star fails on to a white dwarf, causing it to explode.
(2)Type II Supernova occurs in stars ten times or more as massive as the Sun, which suffer run away internal nuclear reactions at the ends of their lives, leading to an explosion.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
    Solution
A supernova is the explosion of a star. It is the largest explosion that takes place in space. The first type of supernova happens in binary star systems. Binary stars are two stars that orbit the same point. One of the stars, a carbon-oxygen white dwarf, steals matter from its companion star. Eventually, the white dwarf accumulates too much matter. Having too much matter causes the star to explode resulting in a supernova.
The second type of supernova occurs at the end of a single star’s lifetime. As the star runs out of nuclear fuel, some of its mass flows into its core.  Eventually, the core is so heavy that it cannot withstand its own gravitational force. The core collapses, which results in the giant explosion of a supernova.
