    Directions For Questions

    Dark Snow
Most of Greenlands interior is covered by a thick layer of ice and compressed snow known as the Greenland Ice Sheet. The size of the ice sheet fluctuates seasonally: in summer, average daily high temperatures
in Greenland can rise to slightly above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, partially melting the ice; in the winter, the sheet thickens as additional snow falls, and average daily low temperatures can drop [12] to as low as 20 degrees.
Typically, the ice sheet begins to show evidence of thawing in late [13] summer. This follows several weeks of higher temperatures. [14] For example, in the summer of 2012, virtually the entire Greenland Ice Sheet underwent thawing at or near its surface by mid-July, the earliest date on record. Most scientists looking for the causes of the Great Melt of 2012 have focused exclusively on rising temperatures. The summer of 2012 was the warmest in 170 years, records show. But Jason [15] Box, an associate professor of geology at Ohio State believes that another factor added to the early [16] thaw; the "dark snow" problem.
According to Box, a leading Greenland expert, tundra fires in 2012 from as far away as North America produced great amounts of soot, some [17] of it drifted over Greenland in giant plumes of smoke and then [18] fell as particles onto the ice sheet. Scientists have long known that soot particles facilitate melting by darkening snow and ice, limiting [19] its ability to reflect the Suns rays. As Box explains, "Soot is an extremely powerful light absorber. It settles over the ice and captures the Sun's heat." The result is a self-reinforcing cycle. As the ice melts, the land and water under the ice become exposed, and since land and water are darker than snow,
the surface absorbs even more heat, which [20] is related to the rising temperatures.
[1] Box's research is important because the fires of 2012 may not be a one-time phenomenon. [2] According to scientists, rising Arctic temperatures are making northern latitudes greener and thus more fire prone.
[3] The pattern Box observed in 2012 may repeat [21] itself again, with harmful effects on the Arctic ecosystem. [4] Box is currently organizing an expedition to gather this crucial information. [5] The next step for Box and his team is to travel to Greenland to perform direct sampling of the ice in order to determine just how much the soot is contributing to the melting of the ice sheet. [6] Members of the public will be able to track his teams progress--and even help fund the expedition--through a website Box has created. [22]

    Solution
Since snow and ice are seen as two separate entities, the possessive pronoun used to describe their reflective properties should be in third person plural, that is "their". Hence, Option D is correct. The rest of the options do not express this condition, hence, incorrect.
  • Question 3

You require a loan for your education. You need to write a letter to the bank to request for a loan. What kind of letter will you write?
    Solution
Options A and D: Formal letters are written to people whom you don't know, or people of a position or authority.
Option D: A business letter is a letter written to a business, and is written by someone who wants to communicate about a business or the like.
The question states that you require a loan for your education. So, you're writing to the manager or an employee of a bank. You are writing to a corporation to ask for a loan and not to discuss a business matter.
Hence, option A is correct and D is incorrect.
Option B: Informal letters are written to friends, relatives, those people whom you know and are a part of your personal life.
    Hence, option B is incorrect.
Option C: A semi-formal letter is written to someone whom you know, in your professional life, or someone whom you respect in position. For example, writing a letter to a teacher. The question states that you're writing to a bank, hence one cannot write a semi-formal letter.
    Hence option C is incorrect.
  • Question 4
    1 / -0
Select the option that appropriately summarizes the sentence:
The student requested that the teacher excuse her absence, but the teacher did not accept.
    Solution
The correct answer is Option B. Summarizing a sentence includes mentioning the main idea of the sentence briefly. Option B summarizes the whole idea of the sentence with the minimum use of words. Option A and B are incorrect as they only mention the idea of the given sentence partially and the whole idea is not clear. Option D is incorrect as the sentence is not brief enough to be called a summary of the given sentence.
  • Question 5
    1 / -0
Martin has just heard that his friend is having a baby. He wants to write a letter to his friend to congratulate him. Which of the following options is the most appropriate for the letter?
    Solution
The correct answer is Option A. Martin is writing to his friend and so the letter is an informal letter. Informal letters are written in a friendly and personal fashion. Option B and D are incorrect as these are formal ways of addressing a fact to the receiver. Option C is incorrect as there is no negative news to be conveyed and thus remains invalid to the context.
  • Question 6

    Best regards,
    TrackFast Courier

What kind of letter is this?
    Solution
The given letter gives information about the delivery of a product.

    Options B,C,D are incorrect.
  • Question 7
    1 / -0
Which of the following is the most appropriate summary of the following line:
I regret to inform you that I will be arriving late to the party for your 20th anniversary.
    Solution
The correct answer is Option C. Summarizing a sentence includes mentioning the main idea of the sentence briefly. Here the writer regrets that he would be late for the 20th anniversary party. The whole idea is summarized in option C. Option B and D are incorrect as they do not give the whole idea of the sentence given. Option A is incorrect as the sentence is not brief enough to be called a summary.

A friend is about to undergo an operation soon. You must write a letter to inform her/his parents, who live in a different town, about this. Which of the following options is the most appropriate close for the letter?
    Solution
The appropriate complimentary closing for the letter will be Option D. The writer knows his friend's parents and the content being a formal news the writer closes with 'Sincerely'. Option A is incorrect as 'Fondly' is generally used to close friendly notes. Option B is incorrect as it is used to close formal letters. Option C is incorrect as the recipients are not the writer's friends.
  • Question 9
    1 / -0
Which option appropriately summarizes the following:
Harry had a long day at work and was very tired by the end of the day. Because of his exhaustion, he became ill the next day.
    Solution
The correct answer is Option C. The sentence portrays the correct idea and with the minimum use of words, suiting to the format of summarizing. Options A and B are not making it clear about when Harry fell sick and so they are incorrect. Option D is incorrect as the sentence is too long to suit the format of summary writing.
  • Question 10
    1 / -0
Choose the option that best summarizes the following:
In a very happy mood, he read the letter in which it was stated that he had been accepted into the university.
    Solution
The correct answer is Option D because it mentions about the complete idea with the minimum use of words. It suits to the norms of the summary writing. Option A and C also mention the complete idea but the sentences are longer and thus are incorrect. Option B is incorrect because it does not mention the complete idea of the given sentence.
