  • Question 1
    1 / -0
What is the approximate lightning frequency?
    Solution
Lightning is a sudden high-voltage discharge of electricity that occurs within a cloud, between clouds, or between a cloud and the ground. Globally, there are about 40 to 50 flashes of lightning every second, or nearly 1.4 billion flashes per year. These electrical discharges are powerful and deadly.
  • Question 2
    1 / -0
How does lightning occur between two charges within the cloud?
    Solution
Build up of electrostatic charge in the clouds results in lightning. During this event, one region of the cloud is accumulated with positive charge whereas the other region is accumulated with negative charge. Hence when positive and negative charges grow large enough, the air present being non-conductive no more resists the flow of charges and electric discharge can be seen in the form of giant lightning sparks.

    Earthquake can cause:
    Solution
An earthquake is a sudden shaking or trembling of the earth. Earthquake is caused by a disturbance deep inside the earth’s crust. Earthquakes can cause floods, landslides, and tsunamis.
  • Question 4
    1 / -0
    What is meant by lightning?
    Solution
Lightning occurs when there is a build up of the electrostatic charge in clouds. Regions within the cloud, one builds up a positive whereas other builds up a negative charge.

    Electroscope is used
    Solution
Electroscope is an old electrical instrument , used to detect the presence and magnitude of electric charges on a body .

The movement of Earth's plates causes
    Solution
The movement of Earth's plates causes Earthquake. Earth's crust is broken up into large pieces called tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are giant pieces of the Earth's crust that fit together and move around on the Earth's surface. Tectonic plates are constantly moving slowly, but sometimes friction between them causes them to lock together and become unable to move. The rest of the plates carry on moving, which leads to increased pressure on the locked section. Eventually, the locked section succumbs to the pressure, and the plates move past each other rapidly. This movement causes a tectonic earthquake. The waves of released energy move through the Earth's crust and cause the shaking we feel at an earthquake site.

Lightning is also known as :
    Solution
Lightning occurs when there is a build up of electrostatic charge in the cloud and it discharges with streaks of light and sound. Hence, lightning is also known as electric discharge.

    When there is lightning and
    a) You are in a jungle ,go under a tall tree.
    b) You are in a jungle,go under a canopy of small trees and bushes.
    c) You are out in the open, crouch on your feet,do not stand up or lie on the ground.
    d) You are in an open field, stay there rather than go inside a completely covered building.Of these the good strategies are :-
    Solution
When there is lightning and you are in a jungle, it is better to go under a canopy of small trees and bushes. The electric field is strongest near the pointed tip of an electrical conductor, and so isolated trees often make for great targets for lightning strikes. The canopy of small trees does not allow charge concentration on the other hand.
Standing out in a field far from trees may also pose risks too as it makes you the tallest object around and maybe a target for lightning strikes. The idea will be to crouch low so that you are not the tallest object around and at the same time keep your feet close together with your heels touching. This will help the electricity to go in one foot and out the other.

Instrument used to measure earthquake is known as :
    Solution
The seismograph is an instrument that measures seismic waves caused by an earthquake.
  • Question 10

Which of the following is/are true regarding Earthquake ?
    Solution
Earth's crust is broken up into large pieces called tectonic plates. Tectonic plates are giant pieces of the Earth's crust that fit together and move around on the Earth's surface. Tectonic plates are constantly moving slowly, but sometimes friction between them causes them to lock together and become unable to move. The rest of the plates carry on moving, which leads to increased pressure on the locked section. Eventually, the locked section succumbs to the pressure, and the plates move past each other rapidly. This movement causes a tectonic earthquake. The waves of released energy move through the Earth's crust in all direction and cause the shaking we feel at an earthquake site.
