  • Question 1

Which of the following statements is/are correct?

    (i)  The nucleoplasm and the cytoplasm together make up the protoplasm.

(ii) Chloroplasts are a type of plastids, which occur in plant cells.

(iii) In many multicellular organisms, all cells have projections called cilia and flagella.

(iv) Cell destruction occurs by centrosomes.

    Solution

In multicellular organisms few cells have cilia and flagella e.g., in humans, cells lining the respiratory tract have cilia and sperm has flagellum. Cell destruction occurs by lysosomes as they contain hydrolytic enzymes.

Which of the following organelles differentiate between plant cell and animal cell?

    (i)   Cytoplasm (ii) Nucleus
(iii) Cell wall (iv) Large vacuole

Which of the following pairs are correctly matched?

    (i)  Protoplasm - Purkinje

(ii) Discovery of cell - Leeuwenhoek

    (iii) Cell theory - Schwann

    (iv) Omnis cellula-e-cellula - Virchow

    (v) Nucleolus - Robert Brown

    Solution

Robert Hook discovered cell. Robert Brown discovered nucleus.

What is the major difference between a human skin cell and a human egg cell?

  • Question 5

Endoplasmic reticulum is a network of interconnecting membranous structures filled with fluid. Which of the following cells would most likely have high concentration of densely packed rough endoplasmic reticulum?

    Solution

Endoplasmic reticulum helps in the transport of substances within the cell. Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) bears ribosomes on the cytoplasmic surface and synthesises secretory and membranous proteins. Then the modified proteins move into the transitional area where they are further processed and packed into secretory vesicles. Thus, RER is rich in cells which are actively engaged in protein synthesis and secretory activity, e.g., pancreatic cells engaged in the production of digestive enzymes, etc.

    Directions For Questions

    Refer to the given paragraph.

X and Y are the two type of cells. The X have a well organised nucleus which is separated from the cytoplasm by the nuclear membrane. On the other hand, Y do not have a true nucleus and their nuclear material is in direct contact with cytoplasm.

Identify X and Y and select the correct option.

    Solution

In the given paragraph, X and Y could be eukaryotic and prokaryotic cell respectively. Amoeba is an eukaryotic organism while Mycoplasma is a prokaryotic organism. Nerve cells and xylem cells are tissues.

  • Question 7

Which of the following statements is/are incorrect regarding genes?

    (i)  They control the transfer of hereditary characteristics.

(ii) Nucleolus carries all the genes.

(iii) They are part of chromosomes.

(iv) They are found only in the nucleus.

    Solution

Nucleus carries genes as they are part of chromosomes (made up of DNA) and chromosomes are present in the nucleus. Genes are also found in mitochondria and chloroplasts as these organelles contain their own DNA.
