In 1841, the General Committee of Public Instruction was abolished and in its place a council of education was established. Landmark in the development of Western education was Wood’s Despatch of 1854. The Despatch categorically states “the education that we desire to see extended in India is that which has for its object the diffusion of the improved arts, science, and philosophy and literature of Europe, in short, of European knowledge.

Banaras Hindu University is a central public university located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. It is one of the oldest universities established in 1916 by Madan Mohan Malaviya and Annie Besant.

The Universities of Calcutta, Bombay, and Madras were established as the outcome of Sir Charles Wood’s dispatch. The first three universities in India Calcutta, Madras, and Bombay were established in 1857.

In 1835, the education policy of Lord Macaulay was published titled “Minute on Indian Education” in which he advocated educating Indians through English and also enrich Indian Languages’ so that they become the vehicles of European scientific, historical and literary expression.

The aim of introducing English education in India was to serve their administrative and political needs. They also thought that English educated Indians would be loyal to the British and would develop western habits, tastes, buy western goods and so on.

Tagore's education marked a novel blending of the ideas of the East and West.
