Rutherford proposed a model in which electrons were assumed to be revolving around the nucleus in well-defined paths called orbits. According to classical physics, every moving charged particle radiates energy. Therefore, while moving in the orbits, electrons will also radiate energy. The loss of energy would lead to shrinking of orbit in size. Hence, the electron will eventually hit the nucleus. Therefore, the stability of the atom could not be explained.
