Sustainable development can be defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations. There is an additional focus on the present generations' responsibility to regenerate, maintain and improve planetary resources for use by future generations.

 The consumption of chemical fertilizers in Punjab is highest in the country. The continuous use of chemical fertilizers has led to degradation of soil health. Punjab farmers are now forced to use more and more chemical fertilizers and other inputs to achieve the same production level.

 Mulching is a process of covering the soil and make more favourable conditions for plant growth, development. Reasons for applying mulch include conservation of soil moisture, improving fertility and health of the soil, reducing weed growth and enhancing the visual appeal of the area.

Not all villages in India have such high levels of irrigation. Apart from the riverine plains, coastal regions in our country are well-irrigated. In contrast, plateau regions such as the Deccan plateau have low levels of irrigation. Also, land area under cultivation is practically fixed.
