    Determinant \(=b^{2}-4 a c\) where \(a, b\) and \(c\) are constants of the equation \(a x^{2}+b x+c=0\)

    Given equation:

    \(x^{2}+k x+4=0\)

    Comparing it with the standard equation, we have \(a=1, b=k\) and \(c=4\)

    Now for real roots, \(k^{2}-4 \times 1 \times 4 \geq 0\)

    For smallest value of \(\mathrm{k}\),

    \(k^{2}-16=0\)

    \(\Rightarrow k=\pm 4\)
