    Meenu bought two fans for Rs 1,200 each. She sold one at a loss of 5% and the other at a profit of 10%. Find out the total profit or loss.

    Solution

    Puchase price of fan = Rs 1,200

    = Rs 120
    S.P. of one fan = Rs(1,200 - 60)
    = Rs 1,140
    S.P. of another fan = Rs (1,200 + 120)
    = Rs 1,320
    Total profit = Rs (1,140 + 1,320) - (1,200 + 1,200)
    = Rs 2,460 - 2,400
    = Rs 60

    The difference between the squares of two consecutive numbers is 25. The numbers are:

    Solution

    Let the numbers be x and (x + 1)

    ∴ (x + 1)2 - x2 = 25

    or x2 + 1 + 2x - x2 = 25

    or 2x + 1 = 25

    or 2x = 25 - 1 = 24;

    x = 24/2 = 12

    ∴ x + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13

    Hence, the numbers are 13, 12.

    7225 plants are to be planted in a garden in such a way that each row contains as many plants as the number of rows. Find the number of plants in each row.

    Solution

    As the plants are to be planted in such a way that the number of plants in each row is equal to the number of rows

    Total number of plants = 7225

    Number of plants in each row × number of rows = 7225

    Number of plants in each row × number of plants in each row = 7225 (since the number of plants in each row = number of rows)

    (number of plants in each row)2 = 7225

    Number of plants in each row = √7225

    Number of plants in each row = 85

    A man bought a number of oranges at 3 for a rupee and an equal number at 2 for a rupee. At what price per dozen should be sell them to make a profit of 20%?

    Solution

    Let 1 dozen oranges be bought at 3 for a rupee and one dozen oranges were bought at 2 for a rupee.

    ∴  C.P. of 1 dozen = Rs. 4

    C.P. of 1 dozen = Rs. 6

    C.P. of 2 dozens = Rs. 6 + Rs. 4 = Rs. 10

    % profit = 20% = 20% of Rs. 10 = Rs. 2

    ∴ S.P. = C.P + Profit = Rs. 10 + Rs. 2 = Rs. 12

    S.P. of 2 dozen oranges = Rs. 12

    ∴ S.P. of 1 dozen oranges = Rs.12/2 = Rs.6.
