The proportion of gases in these layers is almost uniform with height. All weather phenomena occur in the troposphere, and the temperature decreases with altitude. The temperature keeps increasing in the stratosphere because of the absorption of solar radiation by ozone. The mesosphere witnesses a decline in temperature, which reaches around minus 100°C, colder than the Antarctic. The thermosphere is the warmest layer. The atmosphere is very important to all living beings on Earth. Life is possible only because of the atmosphere. The importance of oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, ozone, and water vapour is immense for the survival of all kinds of life. The greenhouse gases maintain a good balance to keep the Earth livable.
