The world’s first Smart Island Monitoring System has been launched on Floreana Island in the Galápagos Archipelago to improve biodiversity conservation and ecosystem monitoring. The project was developed by Island Conservation in collaboration with Fundación Jocotoco under the Floreana Island Ecological Restoration Project. The system uses Low Power Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN), Internet of Things (IoT) technology, artificial intelligence-enabled camera traps, smart traps, and animal trackers for real-time wildlife monitoring. It reduces manual conservation work by about 98 percent and helps conservation teams quickly respond to environmental and wildlife changes.

Rusty-spotted cat was recently photographed for the first time in the Delhi-National Capital Region and Haryana, highlighting the presence of this rare small wild cat in northern India. The rusty-spotted cat is considered the world’s smallest and lightest wild cat species and is known for its nocturnal behaviour and large eyes adapted for night vision. It inhabits moist and dry deciduous forests, scrublands, grasslands, and rocky regions across India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka. In India, its distribution ranges from Tamil Nadu to Jammu and Kashmir, including states such as Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, and Odisha.

Researchers have recorded Lutjanus arakan, a rare species of snapper fish, in Indian waters for the first time at Gopalpur-on-Sea in the Ganjam district of Odisha. Lutjanus arakan belongs to the Lutjanidae family, a group of marine fishes commonly known as snappers that are mainly found in tropical and subtropical coastal waters. Snapper fishes are ecologically important because they act as mid-level predators in reef and coastal ecosystems, helping maintain marine ecological balance. The species was earlier recorded only along the coast of Bangladesh, making this discovery significant for Indian marine biodiversity and fish taxonomy studies.

Environmentalists have raised concerns over a proposed 100 megawatt solar power project near Sambhar Lake, stating that it may damage the fragile wetland ecosystem and biodiversity of the region. Sambhar Lake, located in the Jaipur and Nagaur districts of Rajasthan, is the largest inland saltwater lake in India and has an elliptical shape. The saline wetland is surrounded by the Aravalli Hills and is fed by five streams, namely Rupangarh, Mendha, Samoad, Khari, and Khandela. It was designated as a Ramsar Site in 1990 because of its ecological significance and importance for migratory birds and wetland biodiversity.

A rare medicinal mushroom species, Cordyceps, was recently discovered in East Siang district, Arunachal Pradesh, attracting scientific and commercial interest. Cordyceps is a parasitic fungus that grows on insect larvae, gradually replacing the host tissue and producing long stem-like structures. It is found across the world except Antarctica, while the rarest and most valuable species occur in the Himalayan regions of India, Nepal, and China. Popularly called “Himalayan gold,” it is highly valued in traditional medicine, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceutical research due to its expensive market price.

Yildirimhan Missile is a prototype intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) unveiled by Turkey to strengthen defence self-reliance and expand its strategic military capabilities. The missile is capable of targeting regions across Europe, Africa, and Asia if launched from Turkey. Yildirimhan can reportedly travel at speeds up to Mach 25, which is nearly 25 times the speed of sound and falls under hypersonic speed range. It uses four rocket propulsion engines and is powered by liquid nitrogen tetroxide fuel, which improves range and payload capacity.

Ulsoor Lake has recently undergone desilting after more than three decades, but lake conservation activists criticised the decision to remove silt by only 0.6 metres, calling it inadequate. Also known as Halasuru Lake, it is a man-made lake and is considered the oldest and largest lake in Bengaluru. The lake was built in 1648 by Kempe Gowda II and was later renovated in 1862 by Sir Lewin Bentham Bowring. Ulsoor Lake has an irregular shape resembling the map of India and contains seven islands connected by bridges.

Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation (TARA) was developed by DRDO’s Research Centre Imarat along with other laboratories of the Defence Research and Development Organisation and Indian industry partners. DRDO and the Indian Air Force successfully carried out the maiden flight-trial of TARA off the coast of Odisha on 7 May 2026. TARA is India’s first indigenous glide weapon system designed to convert unguided warheads into precision-guided weapons. It is a modular range extension kit developed to improve the accuracy, range, and lethality of low-cost weapons against ground-based targets.

India’s first International Ophthalmology Research Conference was organised at the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on 9–10 May 2026. The conference is organised by the Department of Ophthalmology at Army Hospital (Research and Referral) in collaboration with the All-India Ophthalmological Society. Nearly 200 ophthalmologists and more than 100 experts from institutions such as AIIMS, PGI Chandigarh, LV Prasad Eye Institute, Sankara Netralaya, and Aravind Eye Care System will participate.

Cyphostemma annamalaii is a newly discovered plant species belonging to the Vitaceae family, commonly known as the grape family. The species was discovered by students and researchers from Annamalai University in the southern Eastern Ghats of Tamil Nadu. It is found in tropical dry forests and open scrub vegetation areas of the southern Eastern Ghats. Cyphostemma annamalaii is a climbing plant with tuberous roots, yellow round fruits, and white or yellow flowers. The genus Cyphostemma is the second-largest genus in the grape family and includes nearly 250 species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions.

Recently, a tiger was sighted in D’Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary after nearly two decades, highlighting its ecological importance. The sanctuary is located in the East Siang district of Arunachal Pradesh. It lies along the border of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh in the floodplains of the Siang River and its tributaries. Earlier, it was known as Lali Wildlife Sanctuary after the declaration of Lali Reserve Forest as a sanctuary. In 1986, it was renamed D’Ering Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary. The sanctuary experiences a tropical climate and receives both north-east and south-west monsoon rainfall.

INS Sagardhwani recently visited Cam Ranh, Vietnam, strengthening India-Vietnam scientific cooperation. It is an oceanographic research vessel commissioned in July 1994. The name “Sagardhwani” means “sound or voice of the sea.” The vessel was designed by Naval Physical and Oceanographic Laboratory (NPOL), Kochi, and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE). It is equipped with advanced scientific laboratories and equipment for oceanographic research. INS Sagardhwani contributes to marine acoustics, naval oceanography, and collaborates with Defence Research and Development Organisation laboratories under the Sagar Maitri initiative.

Recently, 13 children belonging to the Baiga Tribe were rescued from bonded labour in Chhattisgarh’s Kabirdham district. The Baiga are recognised as a Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Group (PVTG) in India. They are mainly found in Madhya Pradesh and also in Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Jharkhand. The tribe primarily speaks Baigani, a dialect influenced by Chhattisgarhi, Gondi, and Hindi. Traditionally, the Baiga practised slash-and-burn cultivation known as “Bewar.” At present, they mainly depend on minor forest produce for livelihood.

Ministry of Panchayati Raj announced the National Panchayat Awards 2025, selecting 42 Panchayats from across India. Karnataka secured the highest number of awards with six Panchayats, followed by Andhra Pradesh and Odisha with five each.
Awards are given under two categories: Deen Dayal Upadhyay Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar and Nanaji Deshmukh Sarvottam Panchayat Satat Vikas Puraskar. The Deen Dayal Upadhyay awards recognise Gram Panchayats for achievements linked to Sustainable Development Goals such as poverty reduction, health, sanitation, water sufficiency, women-friendly governance, and social justice.

Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Achal was recently commissioned by the Indian Coast Guard at Goa Shipyard Limited. It is a new-generation Adamya-class Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), and “Achal” means firm. It is the fifth among eight Fast Patrol Vessels being built by Goa Shipyard Limited for the Indian Coast Guard. The vessel is powered by two 3000 kilowatt advanced diesel engines and can achieve a top speed of 27 knots. It has an operational endurance of 1500 nautical miles and includes advanced systems such as Integrated Bridge System and Automated Power Management System.

National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s Psyche mission captured a crescent image of Mars from nearly 5 million kilometres away. It was launched on 13 October 2023 to study the metal-rich asteroid 16 Psyche and understand the formation of planetary cores. The spacecraft is expected to reach the asteroid in 2029 and will spend around two years orbiting and studying its surface and composition. The Psyche spacecraft is about the size of a small van and uses solar-electric propulsion powered by xenon gas.

Sabarmati River recently remained dry in parts of Ahmedabad after water flow was halted at the Vasna Barrage for gate repair works. It is a monsoon-fed, west-flowing river originating from Dhebar Lake in the Aravalli Range of Rajasthan’s Udaipur district. The river flows southwest through Rajasthan and Gujarat before draining into the Gulf of Khambhat in the Arabian Sea. It is 371 kilometres long and bisects Ahmedabad into eastern and western halves. The basin is bounded by the Aravalli Hills, Rann of Kutch, and Gulf of Khambhat, with agriculture dominating land use.

United Nations Human Settlements Programme recently launched the Catalogue of Solutions 2026–2029 to promote sustainable urban development and better housing policies worldwide. UN-Habitat was established in 1977 after the Habitat I Conference and is headquartered in Nairobi. Its primary objective is to promote socially and environmentally sustainable cities and ensure adequate shelter for all. The UN-Habitat Assembly includes all 193 United Nations member states and approves the organisation’s strategic plans.

National Technology Day is celebrated every year on 11 May to commemorate the success of the Pokhran-II nuclear tests conducted in 1998. The day recognises India’s achievements in science, technology, and innovation. Pokhran-II was a series of nuclear tests carried out at Pokhran Test Range. The 2026 theme is “Responsible Innovation for Inclusive Growth,” focusing on indigenous technology development and the use of Artificial Intelligence for equitable progress. The observance highlights the role of scientific research and technological self-reliance in national development.

National Jute Board has been implementing the Jute Crop Information System (JCIS) since 2023 in collaboration with Indian Space Research Organisation and Jute Corporation of India for scientific monitoring of jute cultivation. Jute Crop Information System (JCIS) integrates satellite imagery, weather analytics, vegetation indices, and geo-tagged field data for near real-time crop monitoring and production estimation. Two major tools developed under the system are BHUVAN JUMP, a mobile application for field monitoring, and PATSAN, a web-based analytics platform for jute surveillance.

Tholpetty Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Wayanad district of Kerala and recently gained attention after a wild gaur was captured and released there by the Forest Department team. It forms part of the larger Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary and the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. Tholpetty is one of the two separated sections of Wayanad Sanctuary, while Muthanga forms the southern section. The sanctuary mainly contains tropical moist dry deciduous and semi-evergreen forests

“Su Sahay” is an Artificial Intelligence-powered chatbot launched by the Supreme Court of India to improve access to justice and court-related services. It is integrated with the Supreme Court website to assist litigants with legal and procedural information. The chatbot was developed by the National Informatics Centre in collaboration with the Supreme Court Registry. Its main objective is to provide guidance on filing procedures, court services, and general court-related queries in a user-friendly manner.

Valley fever recently came into news after a 37-year-old Indian tech professional in California died due to severe lung complications and respiratory failure caused by the infection. Also known as acute coccidioidomycosis, it is a fungal disease caused by Coccidioides fungi found in dry, dusty soil of the southwestern United States, Mexico, and parts of Central and South America. Infection occurs by inhaling airborne fungal spores disturbed through farming, construction, or wind; it does not spread from person to person. Treatment involves antifungal medicines, while no vaccine is currently available.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) Annual Summit was held in New Delhi. The summit highlighted India’s economic resilience amid global geopolitical and economic challenges. India is expected to achieve record exports of nearly USD 863 billion and continues to remain one of the fastest-growing major economies. Discussions focused on Atmanirbhar Bharat, expansion through Free Trade Agreements (FTAs), and opportunities in emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, robotics, and quantum computing.

The Government of India and International Fund for Agricultural Development launched the Country Strategic Opportunities Programme (COSOP) 2026–2033 at Bharat Mandapam. The eight-year programme aims to increase rural incomes, strengthen climate resilience, and promote sustainable livelihoods. It aligns with the Viksit Bharat@2047 vision and focuses on improving resilience of rural communities and strengthening knowledge systems. The programme emphasizes Self-Help Groups (SHGs), Farmer Producer Organisations (FPOs), cooperatives, rural finance, digital agriculture, and climate-resilient value chains.

India Meteorological Department launched India’s first Artificial Intelligence-enabled block-level monsoon forecasting system. The system was developed with the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology and the National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting. It provides hyperlocal and impact-based monsoon forecasts up to four weeks in advance. The model combines Artificial Intelligence with numerical weather prediction models and has an error margin of around four days. Forecasts and alerts will be shared through mobile apps, SMS, and agricultural extension networks.

The Energy and Resources Institute released the report “India’s Nuclear Energy Vision: Strategic Pathways for Small Modular Reactor (SMR) Deployment.” The report states that India will require ₹23–25 lakh crore investment to achieve 100 Gigawatt nuclear power capacity by 2047. It emphasizes the role of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in ensuring clean energy, grid stability, and industrial decarbonisation. India currently operates 25 nuclear reactors with around 8.8 GW installed capacity. The Union Budget 2025–26 allocated ₹20,000 crore for SMR research and deployment, targeting five indigenous SMRs by 2033.

Agalega Islands have gained strategic importance amid increasing competition in the Indian Ocean region. Agalega Islands are a two-island dependency of Mauritius located in the western Indian Ocean. The islands consist of North Island and South Island, connected by a natural sandbank during low tide. Their economy mainly depends on coconut oil exports. The islands are emerging as an important logistics and maritime surveillance base, enhancing India’s reach across the southern and western Indian Ocean.

The forest department has started preparations for a scientific wildlife census in Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary to study the population and movement of tigers, leopards, bears, deer, and foxes. The sanctuary is situated in the Kumaon Himalayas of Uttarakhand. Zero Point (Jhandi Dhaar), the highest point in the sanctuary, offers views of peaks such as Kedarnath, Chaukhamba, Shivling, Trisul, and Nanda Devi. Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary was established mainly to conserve the broadleaf oak forests of the Central Himalayan region.

Botanists have discovered a new plant species named Melanoseris pendryi in the Sikkim Himalayas at elevations above 4,000 metres. It belongs to the genus Melanoseris of the Asteraceae family of flowering plants. The species is characterised by uniquely hairy purple petals and adaptation to harsh alpine conditions through a fleshy branching root system. It grows close to the ground among cushion-like alpine shrubs. Researchers have proposed classifying the species as Critically Endangered due to threats from tourism activities and grazing pressure.
