In this question, there are two patterns that are occurring in every other box. In the first box, you can see there is a circle in the top left corner. In the third box, this circle moves one place anti-clockwise and ends up in the bottom left hand corner and then in the fifth box it moves one place further and ends up in the top right hand corner.

The second pattern relates to the two circle with the arrow in-between. They move in the same direction as the singular circle (anti-clockwise) and they move on every other step. This means that option C must be the correct response.

There are four rows, each containing a set of partially formed ovals. The same four rows appear in each block, but in a different order. In each step of the series the bottom row is moved to the top. This shifts the order of the rows, so that the first row becomes the second, the second row becomes the third and so on.

There is only one rule in this question; the shapes in the left column must all be the same and the shapes in the right column must all be the same. Also, there must be the same number of shapes in the left and the right columns.

The simple rule in this question is that the number of grey arrows in the box below must equal the number of black shaded shapes in the box above. There are three grey arrows below the missing box so the correct answer must contain three black shapes.

There is a lot of superfluous information in this question. The key concept is that the stars run in a pattern of 3 – 5 – 2 – 3 – 5 -2 hence the correct answer must have two stars. There are multiple options with two stars but only one of them (option D) has a mix of black and white stars - a further requirement.

There is a central figure and four figures with one in each corner: (i) The central figure changes from a ‘rectangle with rounded corners’ to a rectangle, trapezoid, 12-sided shape and then repeats this order of shapes. (ii) The four figures rotate clockwise in the first three figures then anticlockwise in the next three around the four corners, one corner at a time.

Each block in the series contains three rows of three circles, two of which never move - one in the centre and one in the bottom left of the box. At each step in the series the black circle that starts in the top left spot moves along the top horizontal row, and then along the middle row – moving a single circle along each row at each step in the series. Within the pattern, the shaded shape moves a space to the right each time. When it reaches the end, it starts from the left again. Likewise, the shape that's on the right will always become the shape on the left. Finally, the total number of edges for all the shapes adds up to 10.

With these 3 rules, the correct answer is E.

i) Rule one: the number of diagonal lines decreases by one each block until there are zero, then increases by one each block (presumably up to a maximum, but we don't know for sure). Since the second image has two lines, the third image (the one we are looking for) must have 1. C, D or F and satisfy this rule.

ii) Rule two: one horizontal line is added to the same diagonal line from one block to the next. Therefore, the third image must contain three horizontal lines on the same diagonal. Only C satisfies this rule.

There are TWO rules impacting this question. The grid is divided into three parts and there are two patterns within the overall shape that move around the grid. The first pattern is the two shaded blocks. They start in the left hand third of the grid and with each stage in the sequence they move one place – first to the right and when they reach the end they move back towards the left. The second pattern is two short horizontal lines. They start in the right hand third of the grid. Unlike the shaded pattern, they only move on every other stage in the sequence. This means they stay where they are for the first two stages and then move oneplace to the left (the middle third of the grid). They stay there for two stages before progressing to the left hand third of the grid.
