  • Question 1
    1 / -0

The following question has four choices out of which ONLY ONE is correct.

During the melting of a slab of ice at 273 K at atmospheric pressure,

    Solution

There is a decrease in volume during melting on an ice slab at 273K. Therefore, negative work is done by ice-water system on the atmosphere or positive work is done on the ice-water system by the atmosphere. Secondly, heat is absorbed during melting (i.e. ΔQ is positive) and as we have seen, work done by ice-water system is negative (ΔW is negative). Therefore, from the first law of thermodynamics, ΔU=ΔQ−ΔW. There is an increase in the internal energy.

  • Question 2
    1 / -0

    Consider the following statements:

    (A) If heat is added to a system, its temperature must always increase.
    (B) If positive work is done by a system in a thermodynamic process, its volume must increase.

    Choose the correct answer.

    Solution

Temperature of the system will increase if there is increase in the internal energy of the system, i.e. ∆U > 0

Work done is said to be positive if ∆V > 0.
