    Directions For Questions

Read the passage and answer the following question.

Today we are facing acute energy shortages, resulting in power shedding from 4 to 10 hours every day at different locations in India. Building new power generating plants is part of long-term planning depending on fossil fuel availability. This is high time, we must work out solutions over the energy crisis with additional advantages if possible.

The average per capita consumption of energy in India is around 500 units per annum. In spite of the high rate of development, these figures are very low, compared to developed countries. (Middle East 10,000+, USA 8000+, Europe, Australia, Japan, etc 4000+) .In our country major contribution to electrical energy generation is by coal and oil-based power generation plants, followed by hydro and nuclear power generating stations. All these power generating plants (except hydro and nuclear) have contributed to CO2 emissions and global warming effects.

Many experts believe that by 2015 the supply of oil & natural gas will be unable to keep up with the demand, or oil and natural gas production would be at a peak 2015. By that time the BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) will need large quantities of oil, especially because of the fast growth of the Indian and Chinese economies. Crude oil Price might shoot to the $150 per barrel level and higher. The impact on our import bill and balance of payment will be very serious.

  • Question 4
    1 / -0

Arrange the sentences A, B, C and D between sentences 1 and 6 to form a logical sequence.

    1. At birth, the infant is unable to focus his eyes or perceive objects in his environment.

    A. Feelings of satisfaction ensue.

    B. Tactual stimuli affect him, but his response is “random” activity, a few reflexes, and some withdrawal movements.

    C. The sight of the mother and the sound of her voice become to the child a part of the situation in which certain organic stresses, such as hunger and physical discomfort, are relieved.

    D. He gradually begins to focus his eyes, to hear sounds, and to become conditioned to certain adapted responses.

    6. Gradually, pleasurable reactions are conditioned to be direct responses to the sight of the mother or the sound of her voice.

    Solution

The CA link is crucial. It is only when ‘hunger and physical discomfort are relieved’ that ‘feelings of satisfaction would ensue’. This brings down the answer options to [b], [c] and [d]. Since at birth the infant is likely to have few reflexes and withdrawal movements, B must follow sentence 1. Moreover D must follow B as it is only gradually that a child becomes conditioned to certain responses. Hence (c).
