Membership of the United Nations Security Council is held by the five permanent members and ten elected, non-permanent members. Prior to 1966, there were six elected members, while the permanent members have not changed since the creation of the United Nations in 1945, apart from the representation of China.

The United Nations Economic and Social Council has 54 member states who are elected by the United Nations General Assembly for overlapping three-year term, with term ending on December 31 of the third year.

The ICJ is composed of 15 judges elected for a nine-year term by the UN General Assembly and the UN Security Council from a list of people nominated by the national groups in the Permanent Court of Arbitration. The election process is set out in Articles 4 – 19 of the ICJ statute.

It is the main judicial organ or branch of the United Nations. In short, International Court of Justice is ICJ; sometimes people call it the World Court. Established ICJ in 1945, ICJ has its headquarters at The Hague, Netherlands.

The ICJ has a total strength of 15 judges who are elected for a term of 9 years. They are elected by members of the United Nations General Assembly and the Security Council where polling takes place simultaneously but independent of each other.
