A proton moving vertically downward enters in a magnetic field pointing towards north. In which direction will the proton deflect?

    Solution

According to Fleming's left hand rule, if we stretch the thumb, first finger and second finger such that they are perpendicular to each other, the first finger gives the direction of the magnetic field, second finger gives the direction of the motion of the positive charge particle then the thumb will give the direction of the force exerted by the magnetic field on the positive charge particle. So when a proton is projected vertically downward in a uniform magnetic field which is horizontal and north ward in direction. the proton will be deflected eastwards.

A bar magnet slowly approaches a coil with the North Pole facing it. The nearer end of the coil behaves like

    (a) North Pole
    (b) South Pole

When the bar magnet is slowly withdrawn, the nearer end of the coil behaves like

    (c) North Pole
    (d) South Pole

    Solution

A bar magnet slowly approaches a coil with the North Pole facing it. The nearer end of the coil behaves like North pole. When a magnet approaches the coil the number of the magnetic field lines linked with the coil increases hence magnetic flux linked with it increases, according to Lenz's law, current will be in induced in such a way that it will try oppose the increasing magnetic flux or we say it will oppose the motion of the approaching North pole so the near end of the coil behaves as north pole.

When the bar magnet is slowly withdrawn, the nearer end of the coil behaves like South pole. When a magnet is receding away from the coil the number of the magnetic field lines linked with the coil decreases hence magnetic flux linked with it decreases. According to Lenz's law, current will be in induced in such a way that it will try oppose the decreasing magnetic flux or we say it will oppose the motion of the receding North pole so the near end of the coil behaves as south pole.

The atomic number of chlorine is 17. What is the total number of electrons in the s-orbitals in the atom?

    Solution

    Cl (Z = 17)
    Electronic configuration: 1s2, 2s2, 2p6, 3s2, 3p5
Total number of electrons in the s orbitals is 6.

Which of the following is not an acidic salt?

    Solution

Na2CO3 is a salt of a strong base, NaOH and a weak acid, H2CO3; thus it is a basic salt.
Its aqueous solution will hydrolize as follows and will yield a strong base and a weak acid.
    Na2CO3 + 2H2O → 2NaOH + H2CO3
The aqueous solution of Na2CO3 will turn the red litmus blue.

Hydrangea is a natural indicator of the pH of a given solution. Analyse the accuracy of the following statements regarding Hydrangea flowers

    I. Pink colour hydrangea flower, growing on a patch of land indicates, the soil pH greater than 7.
II. On adding organic manure to the soil, the colour of the flowers will turn blue.

    Solution

The colour of the hydrangea flower depends on the nature of the soil.
It is pink in basic soil and blue in acidic soil.
Pink colour of the flower indicates basic soil, hence pH > 7.
Hence, the statement I is correct.
On adding organic manure, the soil becomes acidic due to the acid produced by the bacteria that decompose the organic matter. Therefore the colour of the soil changes to blue.
Hence, the statement II is correct.
