The number succeeding – 5 is 1 number greater than – 5.
So, the number succeeding – 5 = – 5 + 1 = – 4
Similarly, the number succeeding – 3 is 1 number greater than – 3.
So, the number succeeding – 3 = – 3 + 1 = – 2

Whole numbers are: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.....
Negative natural numbers are: ..... - 5, - 4, - 3, - 2, - 1
Collecting them together we get:
..... - 5, - 4, - 3, - 2, - 1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 .... which are integers.
Hence, collection of whole numbers and negative natural numbers is called integers.

Arranging the numbers in ascending order, we get
– 30 < – 29 < – 28 < – 27
So, – 27 is the greatest among the given numbers.

The integers that lie between - 9 and - 1, arranged in ascending order are:
- 8, - 7, - 6, - 5, - 4, - 3, - 2
The largest integer among them is - 2.
The smallest integer among them is - 8.

Numbers between – 18 and 2 in ascending order are:

– 17, – 16, – 15, – 14, – 13, – 12, – 11, – 10, – 9, – 8, – 7, – 6, – 5, – 4, – 3, –2, – 1

The only positive number lying between – 18 and 2 is 1.

Sum of – 18, + 6, – 10 and + 12

= – 18 + 6 – 10 + 12

= (6 + 12) – 18 – 10

= 18 – 28

= – 10

Value of (39) + (– 46) + (– 10) + (79)

= 39 – 46 – 10 + 79

= (79 + 39) + (– 46 – 10)

= 118 – 56

= 62

On adding two negative integers, we will always get a negative integer.

For example:- – 4 and – 9 are both negative integers.

Add – 4 and – 9.

= – 4 + (– 9)

= – 4 – 9

= – 13

Let us go through the answer by taking examples:

Example:

(i) Add 4 to 9 (4 is the positive integer and 9 is the given integer)
= 4 + 9 = 13
13 > 9

(ii) Add 4 to -7 (4 is the positive integer and - 7 is the given integer)
= 4 + (- 7) = 4 - 7 = - 3
- 3 < 4

Thus, we see in the above cases, adding positive integer (4) to both positive and negative integers results in an integer which can be both smaller than and greater than the given number.
So, when a positive integer is added to an integer, the resulting integer is sometimes greater than the given integer. (Not always)
