Philistine- a person who is hostile or indifferent to culture and the arts, or who has no understanding of them.

The error is in part (B) of the sentence. The use of the preposition “by” is incorrect here and should be replaced by “from”. It is because “from” is used to show the distance between two objects. For example, my house is four kilometers away from yours.

So, the correct sentence is- Earth is the third planet from the sun and the fifth largest in the solar system. 

The error lies in part (C) of the sentence. When phrases like half, two-third of, etc follow percentage, distance, fraction, or amount, the verb agrees with the noun closest to the verb.

Ex: Half of the pen have been sold.

21% of the population is poor.

21% of the books are paperback.

In the given sentence, the closest noun is “population” which is a mass noun and should be considered singular here. Therefore, the verb must also be singular. This implies that “live” should be replaced by “lives”.

So, the correct sentence is- It is a sad fact that half the population of India lives below the poverty line.
