India's first-ever e-waste recycling unit will come up in Bengaluru, Karnataka which produces an estimated one lakh tonnes of electronic waste a year. The Central Institute of Plastics Engineering and Technology (CIPET), will set up the unit in the next four months.

Chinese e-commerce tycoon Jack Ma said he would step down as executive chairman of Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. in a year, handing over the reins to CEO Daniel Zhang.

Mr. Ma made the announcement on his 54th birthday, saying he has “lots of dreams to pursue" including working in education again. Before founding Alibaba in 1999, Mr. Ma was a teacher—he is known at the company as “Teacher Ma."

For the sixth year in a row and the 14th time, total, Walmart has secured the No. 1 spot on the Fortune 500 list.

With revenue of $500.3 billion, the retailer tops the annual list of America's largest companies, which was released on Monday. Exxon Mobil places second with a revenue of $244.4 billion, roughly half of Walmart's, while Berkshire Hathaway, Apple and UnitedHealth Group round out the top five.

Walmart has made the Fortune 500 list 24 times since the magazine published the first list in 1955, and over half of those times it has been No. 1.

Actress Sonam Kapoor has been named People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India's Person of the Year for 2018 for her animal advocacy efforts. Sonam has been feted as she sings in praise of vegan eating and because she keeps animal skins out of her handbag line for her fashion brand Rheson, apart from taking other action for the welfare of animals. Past recipients of PETA India's Person of the Year Award include Anushka Sharma, Sunny Leone, Shashi Tharoor, Kapil Sharma, Hema Malini, R. Madhavan and Jacqueline Fernandez. The motto of PETA India is “Animals are not ours to experiment on, eat, wear, use for entertainment or abuse in any other way".

India has been ranked 108th among 149 countries at the World Economic Forum (WEF) gender gap index for year 2018. As per report titled 'Measuring the Global Gender Gap', India ranked lower on all segments - economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival ranking, and political empowerment.“It needs to make improvements across the board, from women's participation to getting more women into senior and professional roles. The global list was topped by Iceland having closed more than 85.8% of its overall gender gap. Iceland holds the top spot in the index for the 10th consecutive year. Nordic countries Norway (2nd, 83.5%), Sweden (3rd, 82.2%), and Finland (4th, 82.1%) dominated the top slots. The Gender gap was measured across four key pillars -- economic opportunity, political empowerment, educational attainment, and health and survival.

James P. Allison and Tasuku Honjo will be awarded the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discoveries which led to the development of a revolution in cancer treatment — therapies that work by harnessing the body's own immune system.

Allison, 70, is currently chair of the department of immunology at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. Honjo, 76, is a distinguished professor at the Kyoto University Institute for Advanced Study and a professor in the department of immunology and genomic medicine at Kyoto University in Japan.

They worked separately on the same problem: figuring out how the immune system helps protect us from cancer and how it can be supercharged to mount an effective response.

Jim Allison, as he is known, did his key work at the University of California, Berkeley. His focus was a key part of the immune system called T cells. "When I started working on T cells, nobody understood them at all," he said at a news conference today. They rev up to respond to cancers and other diseases, but they also have a mechanism that slows them down to prevent an overreaction.

Allison discovered a molecule called CTLA-4, which served as the "brakes" for T cells. So Allison had an idea: "Let's just disable the brakes and see if that will allow the immune system to attack cancer," he said. "And it did."
