Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) conducts JNVST (Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test) every year to select meritorious students from rural and urban areas across the country.

JNVST Class 6 2026: Eligibility Criteria
Criteria | Details |

Nationality | Only Indian students are eligible. |
Class 5 Qualification | Must be studying in Class 5 during the academic year 2025-26 in a recognized school (Govt./Govt.-aided/recognized). |
Age Limit | The candidate must be born between 1 May 2014 and 31 July 2016 (inclusive). This age limit applies to all categories. |
First Attempt Only | The student must appear for the selection test for the first time. Repeat attempts are not allowed. |
Rural Quota | At least 75% of the seats are reserved for candidates from rural areas. The student must have studied classes 3, 4, and 5 in a rural school. |
District Eligibility | The candidate must apply from the same district where they are studying in Class 5. |
Gender & Category Reservations | Seats are reserved for girls, SC, ST, OBC (Central list), and Divyang (PwD) candidates as per NVS norms. |

Candidates from NIOS or non-formal education must have a valid 'B' certificate and proof of attending classes regularly.

JNVST Class 6 2026: General Eligibility Criteria
Residence: The student must be a resident of the same district where the Navodaya Vidyalaya is located.
Age Limit:
- The date of birth should be between 1st May 2014 to 31st July 2016 (both dates inclusive).
- Age limit is same for all categories, no relaxation will be given to any reserved category.
Educational Qualification:
- The student must be studying or passed class 5 during the session 2025-26.
- The school should be government aided, government or recognized.
- Students affiliated to NIOS must have a 'B' certificate by 15th September 2025.
First Time Application:
- Students who have already appeared for JNVST exam cannot apply again.
Special Eligibility for Students from Rural Areas
Students from rural areas are given preference in admission. The following conditions apply:
- The student must have completed class 3, 4 and 5 from a government/government aided/recognized school in the rural area.
- The 5th class must have been studied in the same district where the Navodaya Vidyalaya is located.
- The rural area certificate must be certified by the District Magistrate or BDO.
- At least 75% of the seats are reserved for rural students.
Eligibility for urban students
- If a student has studied for even one day in an urban school in either class 3, 4 or 5, he/she will be considered an urban student.
- Urban students can get admission in only 25% of the seats, which is less than the rural seats.
Eligibility for Transgender Candidates
- There is no separate reservation provided to transgender students.
- They will be included in the boys category under general categories (Rural/Urban/SC/ST/OBC/Divyang).
