The Assam State School Education Board (ASSEB) has announced that the Assam Class 12 (HS) exams will be conducted twice a year from the year 2027.

The decision has been taken in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 so that students get more opportunities and a chance to appear for exams under less pressure.

Assam 12th Board Exam now in two phases

The board in its official notification said that the first exam will be held in February-March every year, while the second exam will be conducted after three months, i.e. in May-June.

This second phase will be given the form of repeat and compartment exam:

Repeat exam: For students who have passed but want to improve their marks.
Compartment exam: For students who have failed in one or more subjects and want a second chance.

Eligibility Criteria – To appear for 2nd exam

If students wish to appear for the 2nd stage of Assam HS exam, they must fulfil certain conditions:

Must secure minimum 170 marks in the main board exam (1st exam).
Students must not fail in more than three subjects.

What was the difference in the old rules?

Earlier, Assam students had to wait for a whole year to appear for repeat or compartment exams. They could not appear for the exam again along with the main exam. But now students will be able to improve their score by appearing for the exam again in the same year.

Will there be a change in the 10th exam as well?

Board officials have indicated that ASSEB may bring a similar change in the class 10 board exam from 2027, so that 10th students can also get two chances.
