The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has confirmed that there is no change in the subjects for Class 10 board exams. This clarification comes after concerns about the removal of Punjabi (Code 004) from the draft policy.

CBSE Exam Controller Sanyam Bhardwaj said that the subject list in the draft is only for reference and that all current subjects will continue in the two-board exam system.
People raised concerns because Punjabi was not mentioned in the draft, while languages like Spanish, German, Tangkul, and Japanese were included. A letter to the CBSE chairman stressed that Punjabi is an important Indian language.
There are over one lakh students in CBSE schools in Punjab, and the exclusion caused worry. The letter stated that learning one's mother tongue is essential.
CBSE has uploaded the draft policy on its official website for feedback from schools, teachers, parents, and students.
With the new two-board exam system, Class 10 students can take one or both exams. If they appear in the second-term exam, they can skip subjects they don’t want to attempt again.
As per the CBSE 2026 datesheet, the first phase of Class 10 board exams will be from February 17 to March 6, and the second phase from May 5 to May 20. The exam duration will be 16-18 days, which is almost half of the current 32-day schedule.
