CBSE Class 10 2026: 2 Board Exams Pattern, Improvement in 3 Subjects & Compartment Rules

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has shared a major update for Class 10 students. Starting in 2026, students will have the option to retake up to three subjects in the second board exam session to improve their scores.

These subjects include Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Languages. The Board confirmed this during a national webinar held on November 20, where they discussed the new "dual exam" system for the 2025-26 academic session.

The webinar was broadcast across India and abroad, led by CBSE Chairman Rahul Singh. It included key stakeholders like school principals, teachers, students, and parents. The goal was to explain the new changes clearly, answer common questions, and ensure everyone is ready for this shift.

Dual Examination Session From 2026, Class 10 students will have two board exams every year. The first exam is compulsory for everyone and will happen in February-March. The second exam is optional. It will take place in May for students who want to improve their scores.

Calculation of Best Score Students can keep the best score from either attempt. The final marksheet will reflect the highest marks, giving students a fair chance to boost their overall performance without the fear of losing their original score.

Improvement Options In the second exam session, students can apply for improvement in up to three subjects. The eligible subjects are Science, Mathematics, Social Science, and Languages.

Compartment Examination If a student fails one or two subjects in the first exam, they can sit for the second exam under the "compartment" category. However, those who fail three or more subjects in the first exam will be considered "essential repeaters." They will not be allowed to take the second exam and must repeat the year to reappear for the main exams.

Assessment and Results Cycle The Board plans to declare results for the first exam in April and the second exam in June. This schedule ensures that admissions happen on time and academic calendars aren't disturbed.

During the webinar, officials also focused on the importance of feedback. They provided an email address for queries, promising that answers will be updated regularly in the FAQ section.

This dual examination system aims to lower stress by giving students multiple chances to succeed. Instead of depending on a single, high-pressure exam, students can retake tests in the same year to do better. This aligns with international standards, ensuring a fair and transparent process with timely results for smooth admissions.

With this new format, CBSE wants to build a student-friendly system. The move focuses on clarity and support, reducing confusion and anxiety for students in the coming years.
