The Central Board of Secondary Education has changed the maximum number of children in a section of any class. Issuing a notice, CBSE informed that the rule of 40 students per section in schools has been slightly amended, increasing the limit to 45. This decision has been taken keeping in mind cases where students join the class mid-term due to transfer of their parents and who fall in the Essential Repeat (ER) category. This decision has been taken after representations made by schools regarding the admission of such students.
"Keeping in view the cases of students joining classes mid-term due to transfer of parents, Essential Repeat (ER) category students, CBSE has made partial revision in increasing the student strength to 45 to accommodate the mid-term, repeat category students," the notice said.
"Where students are likely to join classes mid-term due to transfer of parents from one place to another as well as students who fall in Essential Repeat (ER) category, schools may have students in a section over and above the prescribed limit of 40 or upto 45," CBSE said in an official notice.
However, the board clarified that this exemption will be available on a case-to-case basis, for which the school will have to apply to the concerned regional office with supporting documents.
CBSE has directed schools not to use this facility as a general rule and limit the maximum number of students to 40. "However, this facility should not be considered as a general norm for the school and should be used very judiciously. Further, the school should ensure that the number of students in the entry level class is limited to 40 per section," the notice said.
The board reiterated that if a school fulfils the basic requirements such as availability of land and number of rooms as per the prescribed dimensions specified in the affiliation bye-laws, it can apply for increasing the number of sections in the SARAS portal to accommodate more students. CBSE further informed the schools that the link for submitting online applications for increasing or decreasing sections is already available on the SARAS portal by June 30, 2024.
