Starting next academic year, CBSE students from Class 3 onwards may find computational thinking and AI skills integrated into their regular subjects, as the Board plans to roll out an AI-focused curriculum.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has drafted a new Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Computational Thinking Curriculum for Classes 3 to 12. This plan introduces basic AI concepts to younger students, while making AI and computational thinking compulsory for Classes 9 and 10, according to official sources.

The draft has been sent to NCERT for review and aims to introduce AI in a phased, structured manner. It also aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which encourages modern subjects like AI, design thinking, and holistic health in school education.

For Classes 3 to 5, computational thinking — currently taught under mathematics — will be integrated into all subjects, including languages and The World Around Us, which covers environmental studies, science, and social studies. Assessments will link these skills with core subjects like math.

A similar approach will continue in Classes 6 to 8, where students will also be introduced to basic AI concepts through projects, presentations, and assignments. Supplementary learning material, such as handbooks and worksheets, will help them understand how AI works.

The curriculum for Classes 3 to 6 is expected to begin from the 2026–27 academic year, while Classes 9 and 10 may see advanced computational thinking and AI as compulsory subjects from 2027–28. Programming elements and a dedicated textbook are also being planned for these classes.

For Classes 11 and 12, core AI and machine learning will be offered as elective subjects, giving students the option to pursue deeper knowledge in the field.

Overall, the framework recommends 50 hours of study for Classes 3–5 and 125 hours for Classes 6–12. Learning materials are expected to be ready by December, followed by teacher training programs. Math and subject teachers will handle lower classes, while computer science teachers will lead senior classes.

The goal of this initiative is to help students think logically, identify patterns, solve problems efficiently, and use technology responsibly.

Currently, CBSE offers AI as a 15-hour skill module from Class 6 and as an optional skill subject for Classes 9–12. Last month, the Education Ministry confirmed that AI would officially be introduced from Class 3 in 2026–27, with CBSE developing the full curriculum in collaboration with experts.
