CBSE Instructs Schools to Stick to Current Curriculum, with Updates for Classes 3 and 6

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) today issued a notice asking schools to follow the existing curriculum and continue using the same textbooks for all classes except Classes 3 and 6. The board has also asked schools to use the same textbooks as in the 2023-24 academic year.

This announcement by CBSE is to clear any doubts and for more clarity. Citing a circular issued on March 22, 2024, the board directed schools to use the new textbooks published by NCERT by 2023 for Classes 3 and 6. It further reiterated that there will be no change in the curriculum and textbooks of other classes for the academic year 2024-25, starting April 1, 2024.

CBSE said in a social media post on X (formerly Twitter), "In order to clear any misunderstanding and for greater clarity, it is reiterated that there is no change in the existing curriculum or textbooks for all classes other than 3 and 6. Schools are once again instructed to continue using the same textbooks for these classes as they did in the previous academic year (2023-24)."

The official notice issued in March said, "It is mandatory for schools to ensure adherence to the curriculum guidelines mentioned in the opening pages of the curriculum document.

Subjects should be taught as per the prescribed curriculum, incorporating methodologies such as multilingualism, art-integrated learning, experiential learning and pedagogical plans, wherever possible." The plan to revise the books and syllabus for both the classes– for class 3 and 6, was made by the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) as class 3 marks the beginning of the elementary and class 6 marks the beginning of the middle stages and they needed a revamp so that they are in line with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) and to ensure a smooth transition to the new curriculum, the council had also prepared a “bridge course” for class 6 and “brief guidelines” for class 3.

Refuting the media report – Confusion over revised NCERT textbooks for classes 6, 9 and 11 leaves teachers perplexed – meanwhile NCERT too in a post on X said that all the textbooks for class 6 will be available within July 2024 and that the two-month deadline mentioned in the article is incorrect.

It further states: "RPDC Bangalore supplies textbooks to all South Indian states including Tamil Nadu. The title-wise demand for Class 9 and 11 textbooks received from RPDC Bangalore has been fulfilled by NCERT Publications Division and no shortage has been reported by RPDC Bangalore."
