CBSE Re-Evaluation Error: Students Lose Marks in Unrelated Subjects, Raise Concerns

CBSE Re-Evaluation Error: Students Lose Marks in Unrelated Subjects, Raise Concerns

Class 12 students from Faridabad have faced problems after their CBSE results got reduced in subjects they never applied for rechecking in hopes to improve their marks. According to a Times of India report, the incident comes against the backdrop of complaints and controversy related to new OSM evaluation system used by the board this year.

In the first case, Pushkar Sharma had applied for re-evaluation in Chemistry and Home Science after the CBSE Class 12 results were announced on May 13. It must be noted that both re-checking requests helped to improve marks of the student. In particular, his Chemistry marks went up from 42 (marked as repeat in theory – RT) to 52. His marks in Home Science were raised from 70 to 79.

Nevertheless, in Pushkar's revised marksheet, there appeared a significant mistake as his Mathematics marks were decreased from 46 to 40. Such reduction made Pushkar's result in overall once again marked as RT even though he did not ask to check his Mathematics marks.

Another similar incident took place with Aayushman Mishra who had applied for re-evaluation in Physics and Computer Science. Both re-checking requests allowed to increase marks in subjects mentioned above. Nevertheless, his Chemistry marks were reduced from 52 to 43 and marked RT. It is worth mentioning that Aayushman had never requested re-evaluation in Chemistry before. As a consequence, result status of the student became RT again.

Both incidents cause some uncertainty for students as well as their families since the deadline for entering colleges is approaching. It makes students' families worried that the mistake might negatively affect their chances to get into colleges this year.

Parents of Pushkar and Aayushman have already filed a complaint to CBSE regional office. The main idea of the claim is that marks in subjects which were not included in re-evaluation requests should not be changed. Moreover, they claim that delay in correction of the mistake can influence academic year of the students.

As for now, DAV Public School where both students study has sent a letter to the CBSE controller of examinations. They have requested an urgent review of the case and also explained how it is possible that marks in unrelated subjects have been revised when students had not applied for re-checking in those subjects.

According to the TOI report, the school principal stated that the issue has made a lot of trouble for both students as well as their families. She stated that children are under tremendous pressure and one of the parents noted that she does not leave the child alone due to stress caused by the situation.

Moreover, the school informed that CBSE officials referred to the matter as "policy issue". It is claimed that in the subjects submitted for rechecking, marks increased but the grace marks that had been given previously were withdrawn in the rest of the subjects.

Such an explanation did not satisfy the principal. First of all, she did not know about such a policy and secondly, she noted that CBSE did not give any notification about it officially. Moreover, she stated that if the policy really existed, CBSE had to communicate it clearly to students, parents, and schools.

The principal added that if the problem will not be fixed quickly enough, both students will be forced to write the compartment exams even though their marks have been increased in the subjects where they had applied for rechecking.

Due to the approaching deadline for college admissions, students' families have appealed to CBSE asking to solve the problem quickly. Otherwise, the mistake will ruin students' whole academic year.
