JEE Main 2026 Tie-Breaking Rule Explained - How Multiple Candidates Get the Same Rank After Result
JEE Main 2026 Session 2 result is expected on April 20, 2026.
When millions of students compete for limited seats, it's natural for two or more candidates to end up with the same NTA score.
So how does NTA decide who gets the better rank? That's where the tie-breaking rule comes in. Here's a simple breakdown of exactly how it works.
JEE Main Tie-Breaking
| Step | Paper 1 (BTech) | Paper 2A (BArch) | Paper 2B (BPlanning) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st Priority | Mathematics | Mathematics | Mathematics |
| 2nd Priority | Physics | Aptitude Test | Aptitude Test |
| 3rd Priority | Chemistry | Drawing Test | Planning Section |
| 4th Priority | Accuracy (All Subjects) | Accuracy (All Sections) | Accuracy (Full Paper) |
| Final Step | Same Rank Assigned | Same Rank Assigned | Same Rank Assigned |
Why Does Tie-Breaking Matter?
Even a small difference in rank can mean the difference between getting your preferred branch at a top NIT or missing out entirely. The tie-breaking rule directly affects —
your All India Rank (AIR), your JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility, your JoSAA counselling priority, and your admission to NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs.
So understanding this rule isn't just useful — it's important.
How NTA Calculates Your Rank First
Before tie-breaking even kicks in, NTA converts raw marks into NTA percentile scores. Since JEE Main is conducted in multiple shifts, raw marks can't be compared directly. So NTA uses a normalisation process.
Here's how it works —
Raw marks are converted into NTA percentile scores. Percentiles are calculated up to 7 decimal places to reduce ties as much as possible. The final AIR is prepared after Session 2, using the best score from either Session 1 or Session 2 for each candidate.
Even with 7 decimal places, some candidates still end up with identical scores — that's when the tie-breaking sequence begins.
Paper 1 (BE/BTech) — Tie-Breaking Rules
Paper 1 is the most common paper, taken by engineering aspirants. It's a Computer-Based Test covering Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry — 75 questions and 300 marks in total.
If two candidates get the same NTA score, NTA resolves the tie in this order —
Step 1: Higher NTA score in Mathematics gets priority first
Step 2: If still tied, higher NTA score in Physics is compared
Step 3: If still tied, higher NTA score in Chemistry is compared
Step 4: If still tied, the candidate with a lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers across all subjects is ranked higher
Step 5: If still tied, this accuracy check is applied to Mathematics first
Step 6: Then to Physics, and then Chemistry
Step 7: If the tie still isn't broken after all steps — both candidates are assigned the same rank
Why Does Mathematics Get Priority?
Mathematics has been accorded the highest priority in the selection process, as it is considered the strongest indicator of a candidate's analytical and problem-solving abilities.
This subject-wise prioritization plays a significant role in the NTA's merit ranking system for engineering admissions.
Paper 2A (BArch) — Tie-Breaking Rules
Paper 2A is for BArch aspirants. It combines Computer-Based and offline drawing components — 400 marks in total.
Tie-breaking sequence for Paper 2A —
Step 1: Higher NTA score in Mathematics
Step 2: If tied, higher score in the Aptitude Test
Step 3: If tied, higher score in the Drawing Test
Step 4: If tied, lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers across all sections
Step 5: Narrowed down to Mathematics, then Aptitude Test
Step 6: If all criteria fail — both candidates get the same rank
Paper 2B (BPlanning) — Tie-Breaking Rules
Paper 2B is fully Computer-Based for BPlanning aspirants — covering Mathematics, Aptitude Test, and Planning-based questions — 400 marks in total.
Tie-breaking sequence for Paper 2B —
Step 1: Higher NTA score in Mathematics
Step 2: If tied, higher score in the Aptitude Test
Step 3: If tied, higher score in Planning-based questions
Step 4: If tied, lower ratio of incorrect to correct answers across the full paper
Step 5: If all criteria fail — both candidates get the same rank
The Accuracy Rule — What Does It Mean?
Rather than mere accuracy, the ratio of incorrect answers to correct answers is taken into consideration. A candidate who has fewer incorrect answers relative to their correct ones receives a better rank. This benefits students who attempted to solve questions carefully rather than resorting to guesswork.
Therefore, even if you attempted fewer questions but answered most of them correctly, you can still achieve a higher rank than someone who attempted more questions but answered many of them incorrectly.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What is the JEE Main tie-breaking rule 2026?
When two candidates get the same NTA score, NTA compares subject-wise scores starting with Mathematics, then Physics, then Chemistry, followed by accuracy ratios. If everything matches, both get the same rank.
Q. What if two students get the same percentile in JEE Main?
NTA applies the inter-se merit sequence — comparing subject scores and accuracy ratios step by step. The tie is broken at whichever step a difference is found.
Q. Why is Mathematics given priority in tie-breaking?
Mathematics is considered the strongest indicator of analytical ability, so it's placed first in the tie-breaking order.
Q. Is JEE Main rank based on the best of two sessions?
Yes. NTA takes the best NTA score from either Session 1 or Session 2 and uses that to calculate the final AIR.
