The Indian government has announced that it will implement all the recommendations from a seven-member expert panel regarding changes to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Undergraduates (NEET-UG). This decision follows a review of how the National Testing Agency (NTA) managed the exam last year.

On August 2, 2024, the Supreme Court decided not to cancel the NEET-UG exam, which had faced many issues. The court found no strong evidence of leaks or cheating that could harm the exam's fairness. To improve clarity and reduce cheating, the Supreme Court expanded the expert panel's role.

This panel, led by former ISRO chief K. Radhakrishnan, was asked to examine how the NTA operates and suggest necessary changes.During a court session, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed Justices PS Narasimha and Manoj Misra that the committee had completed its report and that the government is ready to make all suggested changes.

Mehta stated, “We’re going to implement all the recommendations, and we can check back in six months.” The court then postponed the case for three months, planning to revisit it in April. The full details of the report haven’t been shared yet because they include sensitive information about how exams are conducted.

However, earlier concerns raised by the Supreme Court pointed out several problems with the NTA. These included a security breach at an exam center in Hazaribagh, Jharkhand, where unauthorized individuals accessed question papers; transporting question papers using e-rickshaws; and distributing incorrect sets of question papers to candidates.

The expert committee includes several key members alongside Radhakrishnan: Randeep Guleria, B J Rao, Ramamurthy K, Pankaj Bansal, Aditya Mittal, and Govind Jaiswal. The Supreme Court has broadened the committee’s responsibilities to ensure exams are secure and well-managed, improve data security and technology, develop policies and engage with stakeholders, cooperate internationally, provide mental health support for students, and train NTA staff.

In 2024, over 2.3 million students participated in NEET-UG for admission into MBBS, BDS, AYUSH, and other related programs. Additionally, in November 2024, the Supreme Court dismissed a petition seeking a review of its earlier decision not to conduct a new NEET-UG exam. This commitment to reform aims to create a safer and clearer examination process for future candidates.
