    How many three-digit numbers can be formed without using the digits 0, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 ?

    Solution

Three-digit numbers are to be formed by using the digits 1, 7, 8 and 9.

To form a number of three digits, we are to fill up three places : the hundred's, the ten's and the unit's. The hundred's place can be filled in 4 different ways because anyone of 1, 7, 8 and 9 can fill up this place.

Similarly, ten's and unit's places can also be filled in 4 different ways each.

    Accordingly, by FPC,

    the no. of three-digit numbers  = 4 × 4 × 4 = 64

  • Question 9
    1 / -0

The length of the diameter of the circle which touches the x-axis at the point (1, 0) and passes through the point (2, 3) is

    Solution

    Let the equation of the circle is (x−1) 2 + (y − k) 2 = k2

    It passes through (2, 3)

    ⇒ (2-1)+ (3-k)2 = k2

    ⇒  1 + 9 + k- 6k = k2

    ⇒   10 - 6k = 0

    ⇒    k = -10/6

    ⇒    k = 5/3 ⇒ diameter = 10/3
