  • Question 2
    1 / -0

Sahil's mother's age is 10 years more than twice the age of Sahil. If four years ago, his mother's age was 3 times his age, find the present age of Sahil and his mother.

    Solution

Let the present age of Sahil be x years.
    ∴ Mother's present age = (2x + 10) years

    Four years ago,
    (2x + 10 - 4) = 3(x - 4)
    2x + 6 = 3x - 12

    Step 1:
    Subtract 3x from both sides.
    2x + 6 - 3x = 3x - 12 - 3x
    - x + 6 = - 12

    Step 2:
    Subtract 6 from both sides.
    - x = - 12 - 6
    - x = - 18

    Step 3:
Divide both sides by - 1.
    x = 18

    Sahil's age = 18 years

    ∴ Mother's age = 2 × 18 + 10 = 36 + 10 = 46 years.
