Assam Board Update : Class 10 Board Exams to be Discontinued from 2024 in Assam, SEBA-AHSEC Merger Announced

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced that Class 10 Board Exams will be discontinued in the state from 2024 onwards. On Monday, June 5, 2023, the Assam CM also confirmed that both the boards – SEBA and AHSEC will now be merged to form a single education board in Assam.

In order to align with the suggestions made under National Education Policy, NEP 2020, the board exams for Class 10, also known as matriculation exams will be discontinued to provide students with a seamless transition from Class 10 to Higher Secondary.

Speaking at an event, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that a merger will take place for the Secondary Education Board of Assam (SEBA) and Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC).

"From now onwards, there will be no such examinations called Matriculation or Matric exams. The focus will be on a pass or fail system within the school itself. The decision has been taken to ensure students can begin their studies for Classes 11 and 12 right after completing Class 10," stated CM Sarma to local media.

Explaining this decision, CM Sarma shared that the Class 10 Exams will no longer be known as the Matric exams but will be conducted by schools or academic councils at the district level. The examinations would be internal in nature and will be held in accordance with the "5+3+3+4" system introduced in NEP 2020

SEBA and AHSEC will be merged to form one common education board of Assam. Through this merger, the administrative process is expected to be streamlined. The merger also aims for a more cohesive approach towards secondary and higher secondary education in the state.
