CAT 2026 Registrations Fall: Does It Increase Your Chances of IIM Admission?
The CAT 2026 registration process has ended, with approximately 2.84 lakh candidates successfully registering for the Common Admission Test (CAT). The CAT 2026 exam is scheduled for November 29, 2026, in computer-based mode. Candidates who have completed their registration can appear for the exam to seek admission to MBA and other postgraduate management programmes at the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and other top B-schools in India.
As per the latest data on CAT 2026 registrations, there has been a fall in the number of registrations to the tune of around 3.73 percent compared to the last CAT exam i.e. CAT 2025. While the number of registrations last year was 2.95 lakh, this time there have been 3.27 lakh CAT user ID’s generated, but successful registrations amounted to only 2.84 lakh. Such a trend has led many to question if fewer applicants could increase the chances of getting into IIMs. The below discussion sheds light on the same.
CAT Registration 2026: How Many Candidates Have Applied?
According to the CAT 2026 registration statistics, there is a drop compared to the previous year. It was observed that the number of candidates who successfully registered for CAT was around 284,000, which is a decrease of 3.73% when compared to the 295,000 who had applied for CAT in the year 2025.
Additionally, the number of CAT user IDs generated fell from 342,000 to 327,000, which means a decrease of about 4.39%.
There were around 43,000 CAT IDs generated that did not lead to successful registration. The reasons behind this might be incomplete application or non-payment of fees, but there could be other reasons also.

CAT 2026 Registrations Fall: Will IIM Admission Become Easier?
The decline in CAT 2026 registration of 3.73% could suggest a slightly smaller pool of applicants. However, fewer applicants do not necessarily imply an increased chance of admission for the individual candidate.
Admission into IIMs is dependent on various criteria such as the percentile of CAT, educational record, category-based cut-off marks, work experience, and other selection processes conducted afterwards. All of these depend on the particular institute.
There may be a possibility of a reduced number of test takers as a result of lower registration, but the competition for securing a seat in the prestigious IIMs can still be tough.
Hence, the individual should focus more on attaining a high percentile of CAT 2026.
