CBSE Class 12 Results 2026: Teachers' Union Asks Delhi Education Minister to Recall Notices Over OSM
GSTA, a teachers' union, has written to Delhi's Education Minister, Ashish Sood, seeking the withdrawal of show-cause notices issued to teachers due to this year's low CBSE Class 12 board exam result.
In the letter to the minister, GSTA has put the blame for the drop in pass percentage on the errors made in the On Screen Marking (OSM) system introduced this time for marking Class 12 exams by CBSE.
There has been a dip in performance of the candidates in Delhi this time. While the pass percentage stood at 91.97% as compared to 95.18% in the previous year, out of the total number of students appearing in the examination, 2,76,583 candidates managed to pass, while the total number of examinees was 3,00,732.
Both regions of Delhi – Delhi-East and Delhi-West have shown decline in the performance of candidates. While the pass percentage in Delhi-West region was recorded as 92.34% as against 95.37% last year, in the other region, Delhi-East, it came down to 91.73% as compared to 95.06%.
GSTA has contended that they had initially proposed CBSE conduct OSM on a pilot basis, and implement it fully only after its efficacy and effectiveness was ascertained.
According to GSTA, various kinds of problems cropped up during the process of evaluation such as blurry scanned answer sheets, wrong uploads of the answer booklets, missing pages and difficulty in identifying answers penned by hand on computer screen.
As a result, they argued, the evaluators had no choice but to be 'extremely cautious' about giving marks leading to stricter evaluation of the answer papers.
Moreover, post-results, complaints came in that the marks awarded were below expectation, besides problems in getting answers evaluated afresh.
Recounting the general national trend where CBSE Class 12 results have shown dip this time across the country, GSTA says the teachers alone cannot be held responsible. The notice and memoranda have been issued to teachers asking them why they deserved such action and further threatening them with adverse remarks in APAR, thereby causing stress and anxiety among teachers.
According to GSTA General Secretary Ajay Veer Yadav, the teachers continuously keep tabs on students' progress through remedial classes, additional coaching and PTMs. However, apart from this, students' performance individually also plays a role in obtaining good marks in exam results.
Therefore, GSTA is demanding that all the notices and memorandums issued to teachers in connection with the Class 12 exam results should be declared as null and void and create a positive atmosphere among teachers to achieve better results academically in the future.
The fall in performance was also associated with a widening gender gap in which girls outperformed the boys significantly. In Delhi-East, for example, while 94.09 percent of the girls passed, only 89.32 percent of the boys did so, and in Delhi-West, girls passed at 94.73 percent, while the boys were 90.04 percent.
Across India, girls outperformed boys by 6.73 percentage points in CBSE Class 12 this year, though pass percentages dropped for both groups compared to 2025.
This time, Class 12 exams were held in 1,799 schools and 842 exam centres in Delhi. Furthermore, Delhi witnessed the maximum number of special-needs children appearing for the Class 12 board exams, where more than 1,900 candidates have enrolled themselves for the same.
As per sources, the reason behind the drop in pass percentage could be attributed to the OSM policy, where subjectivity in the assessment process has been curtailed to the minimum.
In an official statement after the results, CBSE said it had "successfully implemented OSM for the evaluation of Class 12 answer books in the 2026 Board Examinations", calling it the largest such exercise so far.
The board said 98,66,622 answer books were evaluated through OSM. According to CBSE, the system removes totalling and uploading errors, ensures evaluation strictly follows the marking scheme, lets teachers check answer scripts remotely without physically moving copies, and improves transparency, confidentiality, and accountability in line with reforms under the National Education Policy.
